Should Wenger Concentrate More On Arsenal?

Never one to keep his opinions to himself too long, Arsene Wenger seems to be immersing himself in all things Chelsea this week. Having given us the benefit of his thoughts on Ballack, he’s now moved on to our new manager.

Of Scolari, he says “I like him as a person. I like him as a coach and I think he has charisma. He will add something to the Premier League.” He goes on to inform us all what to expect next season too in terms of our game because according to Arsene, our system isn’t going to change. Phew! I bet Scolari’s relieved to hear that. In fact, the only change according to the font of all footballing knowledge, will be as a result of Scolari’s personality and the players he will buy.  And just to make sure we all know he likes the Brazilian, Wenger gushes “He is a quality man, a quality manager”.

So with such a glowing reference, you’d assume all in the garden was rosy. But this is Wenger we’re talking about here, surely there has to be a dig in there somewhere? Of course there is and it comes in the form of a dig at the club itself, with Wenger questioning the timing of the appointment. With the announcement coming midway through the group stages of Euro 2008 and Portugal going out to Germany in the quarter finals, the Frenchman suggests “it didn’t help Portugal.” But, whilst he’s right the timing was out of order, it’s his reasons for bringing it up in the press that made me laugh. Because as soon as he drags Spurs into it, going on about the effect the Jacques Santini situation had on France in Euro 2004, it just smacks of a bitter man with old wounds that have failed to heal.

Talking of which, he thought he might as well take a pop at England while he was at, so, comparing them to Euro 2008 finalists Germany – oh and these are the same finalists who only beat Portugal because of the Scolari situation remember – Wenger says “I think Germany’s mental strength comes from belief. Belief comes from history. The history backs them up in every tournament. They know they have done well in the past and go into tournaments with that kind of strength. England have to create more, to create that history.”

In fact, he sounds so concerned about our international side, maybe he’s considering some English players in his own side?

  1. Should you concentrate more on chelsea/russia?

  2. never mind arsene concentrating on arsenal, what are you doin posting your views on an ARSENAL site dipshit

  3. As an Arsenal fan, i agree. I’ve been saying it all summer. This bloody nasri transfer is going on forever, hleb is in limbo, adebayor doesnt know what he wants and the only official signing we’ve made is a 17 year old welsh kid. And Wenger seems to be talking about everything and anything. Less talk and more action is what i wanna see

  4. Give it a rest. Wenger was complimenting both Ballack and Scolari. Why do you have to make a sow’s ear out of a silk purse?

  5. Everything he said is fair and lucid. What, exactly are you complaining about? He made one criticism of Chelsea and you agree with it. Perhaps Chelsea fans should concentrate more on Chelsea?

  6. He was aksed his opinion and he gave it. He was on French TV as a pundit just the same as Martin O’Neill.

It was abit under hand to name Scolari just before an important game as your new manager.

  7. Chelsea continue to act in the class less manner of the nouveau riche in the Scolari announcement. When Arsenal find English players of the prerequisite technical ability (Ramsey for starters) then we will sign them.

  8. Should chelseadenise concentrate more on Chelsea? Simpleton

  9. lol in the same way you think wenger should concentrate on arsenal u should concentrate on your club. the chelsea blog seem to always post things about arsenal when its just uncalled for and no one cares

  10. So Wenger has an opinion or two about Chelsea but we’re not supposed to question them, is that it?
west mids gooner - I DON’T post on Arsenal sites.

  11. Good grief. Talk about chip on shoulder! Wenger was asked directly in an interview what he thought about Scholari’s appointment and the timing of it. Is he not allowed to answer questions about anything other than Arsenal? Grow up.

  12. listen mate, i’m also an arsenal fan, and i’m not going to an idiotic response like west mids gooner, but this is the way the media works. a newspaper asks wenger a bunch of questions, AND HE ANSWERS them. don’t act so surprised. nothing out of order was said, he just gave his opinion in response to a question and it’s a damn sight more informed than yours…

  13. you do know that arsene is working as a pundit and interviewed often abt euro 08 ? He was asked a question and he answered it. he didnt just decide to mention scolari for fun. And this is the 4th article or more that you’ve mentioned a whole story focussing on arsenal. This site keeps appearing on newsnow when i’m searching for arsenal news.

  14. He is doing lots of media work for French TV so unsurprsingly his opinion is asked for and he gives it. What’s the problem?

  15. If it weren’t for the gangsters russian money… you’d be at the same predicament as Leeds. At least we’re MOSTLY owned by English hey? You big gay Russian bears!

  16. he was being complimentry

  17. Why don’t you concentrate on chelski and not on Wenger. You obviously seem more interested in what he has to say that what is actually happening at your sad excuse for the club. Get a life and report on your own team, he was only complimenting Ballack and Scolari

  18. everyone has opinions, its just that your bitterness hones into wengers opinions and picks them apart and find things you could posibly bitch about. he wasnt taking a dig at anyone and no one has a problem with what he said except childish chelsea fans with nothing to do

  19. Although i only hate them from a londoners rivalry position.

As for this artical, well, much of your anilysis is true, but i have to say its a poor interpretation of Wenger’s words on the final point. What he says is accurate, the Germans manage to grind out results when needed, much in the way Chelsea do. Its a winning mentality and a refusal to lose. Its not English grit or History, its down to team personality, and thats from the manager and players.

  20. Nothing bad in these comments compared to those we used to hear from that Portuguese half wit.Wenger was asked a question and answered it honestly and respectfully unlike Mourinho whose sole object in life seemed to be self promotion.

  21. he gets asked questions and he gives his opinion…what’s wrong with that?

  22. AW has also made our second signing of the summer this morning, and yes, you guessed it, its a 15 year olf from AZ alkmaar

  23. Get over it. The man was asked his opinions and gave them. Yet more small club mentality from Chelsea fans. Newsflash: not everything is an attack on Chelsea. He’s working for the media ffs - they ask him a question, he answers it. Thats how it works in the media.

  24. what’s it matter? this is more tripe.

Arsene doesn’t discuss Arsenal’s transfer business out in the open. You take snippets from different interviews and base a whole dissertation on them? It’s foolish to trust the sporting press to tell the truth and not twist statements. By expounding on it you only affirm their belief that football fans will swallow whatever rumors they print.

Leave the managing to the managers, and read between the lines. We’ll all know how much focus has been spent on each team at the end of next season.

  25. Gawd, strike a lite me old china plate and no mistakin, you chavs are effin obsessed with Arsenal and their manager aintchas?

Voyeurs the bleedin lot of yers.

  26. People seem to think Arsene Wenger waxes lyrical about things outside his own sphere of influence on a regular and quite annoying basis. The facts remain that as he speaks about all things football with intelligent and thoughtful comments the worlds’ press are eagar to hear his opinion on most developments in the game. The only intelligent comment posted here is you agreeing with him

  27. Chelseadenise… dont be so sensitive and I suspect you have a lot of time on your hands ;-) … Wenger, is a whether you like it or not , a highly regarded expert in the world of football and because he has a very good and open relationship with the media they often seek his opinions on a wide range of issues in the game. For them it fills spare space left by the lack of premiership football and also this summer of Englands inability to qualify. According to a whole host of journalists he is always willing to discuss and talk about football in spite of hacks misquoting or exploiting his openess. He is an enlightened mind in football so a bit of respect AND please read the full text properly. He is completely complimentary about Scolari and Ballack and I think rightly so. VIVA ESPANA VIVA CESC

  28. self contradicting

  29. “Never one to keep his opinions to himself for too long”… are you demented? AW has more class in his petit fingeure than all Chelsea managers of the last decade combined.

I have yet to meet a Chelsea fan yet who is not chippie or nursing an anti-Arsenal grudge of some sort - we are better than you, always were, always will be, get over it!

  30. Does one not realising that he has been employed at the competition for his footballing opinions? And as a result, will be questioned by reporters regarding topical players/coaches etc?

Or, chelseadenise, do you REALLY think Wenger grabs a reporter aside with an urge to discuss certain matters?

You are writing within what can be considered the media, I think you should know the basics.

  31. My word people! He has been working as a commentator for french television and reporters most likely ask him these questions. Of course they are going to ask about Chelseas new manager, we talking rivals here. Any chelsea manager would have been asked about Arsenals new manager, if there was any. But as we all know Arsenal hasn’t changed a manager in a long time, so there is nothing to ask the chelsea manager about.

    Talk about paranoia

  32. Was it when he started talking about history when you started getting so touchy?

    I wonder why?

Now do us all a favour and make a nice cup of tea.

  33. wenger has always got arsenal hat on,most of the arsenal players have been playing at the euros and some of the players he has scouted is playing the euors, and some of the players in the final. i feel is was not for euros that he would have made purchaces already.wenger has already got most of his tranfers done, also with ben arfa situation sorted nari is pretty mush sorted,i think is still looking for winger and amybe a holding midfielder, wenger has got scouting hat on at the euros.

  34. Good grief woman! If Wenger gets asked a question he usually answers it. Someone asked him about Scolari and next season in the Premier League and he gave his (rather flattering) opinion. Stop trying to foster controversy where there is none. Get over it.

  35. Mr Wenger has been asked Questions on these topics by journalists/Presenters, What is he supposed to do just ignore them and twiddle his thumbs, The man said he likes Scholari and your gobbin off about it. The man cant win.

  36. Paranoid Russians. Fucking hell, it’s a free society over here and if you’re a TV pundit you have an obligation to answer the question.
At least Wenger is articulate enough to answer the question unlike blabbing Grant and Roman the silent murderer.
Voyeurs the lot of you. Stop looking about us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. Chelseadenise - who is contradicting? what? please explain.

  38. The question should be

“Should The Chelsea Blog, concentrate more on Chelsea?”

  39. Chelseadenise - maybe over dinner?

  40. What are you Arsenal fans crying about? We have made plenty of signings:
15 year old Spanish left back
    15 year old Dutch midfielder
17 year old French defensive midfielder
    17 year old Welsh midfielder
And coming up is a 20 year old French midfielder/winger and we´ve gotten a 19 year old Mexican and an 18 year old Spaniard back from loan.

About the article, it´s stupid. Wenger has been asked hundreds of questions in his jobs for both the French television as well as the Arabian one. What is he suppossed to say when he is asked about the whole Scolari fiasco? “I think it´s great but I only talk about Arsenal”? You probably think that when he mentions Vieira, Henry or Anelka then he secretly expressing his regrets of selling them, right?

  41. I waited for the interviewer to ask ,”and what do you think Scolari will buy first ,a new home ” oh no managers dont stay that long .”Will you try to buy the title as is usual ,or some tissues for dear John

  42. Whilst Chelsea’s 3rd choice manager is chasing the Clubs 3rd choice targets, having been rejected by likes of Kaka and Ribery, Abo is getting out his 2002 fantasy football team and insisting that your new manager picks the ageing galacticos from that, and only dreaming of the type of football that we Arsenal fans see every week.
Chelsea are the laughing stock of Europe and Wenger is leading your club a merry dance by claiming an interest in mediocre players that Chelsea then end up paying £28m for.
When Platini puts a cap on your player and salary spend, your pig sty portacabin shack of a ground at the back of Bates Motel, will afford you little more than a couple of ageing Fulham rejects.

  43. Whats the big deal?

  44. Well that was pretty easy to piss off Arsenal fans.

  45. My comment was deleted.

Cant handle the truth denise? Insecure much?

  46. Abz - maybe it was abusive or irrelevant?

  47. Stone, are you having a laugh?? A bunch of 15 -17 years old dont count as building for next season. I’m an Arsenal fan and i’m sick of the biased view among most fans. Wenger in my opinion should not be doing “loads of media work. Maybe he should analyse our collapse last season and get rid of some deadwood like william gallas. First he blamed our defence for losing the league and now he’s blaming the victory in milan because it unsettled our players. He is a legend but thats nonsense. Its about time we showed our intent and went after some experience that can bring along the youth. As for this article, wenger has got a comment for everything, and i can see why people are tired of listening to him.

  48. Tony - at last a comment that’s spot on! Totally agree with all of that.

  49. ChelseaDenise - you’ve made yourself look a complete fool. What has Arsene actually said or done that has upset you so? Arsene hasn’t attacked Chelsea or England as your fragile sensiblities seem to suggest. As an Arsenal fan I am quite comfortable at acknowledging Scolari and Fergie are both excellent managers. Are you so unable to see anything good in Arsene? He is also an excellent manager if you can’t admit that then your petulence is blinding your judgement. Why don’t you write about Chelsea instead?

  50. In what part of the article exactly did I imply he isnt a good manager? And since he was on about Scolari, doesn’t that make it about Chelsea?

  51. Guess if Wenger were Chelsea s manager, and there is a better chance of Bin Laden being the next Pope, you’d have Abo’s PR dimwits screening every question he s asked and escorting him out the press room. This is why he would never work there, why an independent minded, articulate manager like Mourinho, would never work there again and why a decent chap like Scolari will probably leave by Christmas.
Well known that he was Abo’s 3rd choice, despite the PR guy s attempts to say otherwise. Abo will throw 3rd choice toys out the pram very quickly. But hey , we’d all love to be paid 4 times what we deserve and get 4 years worth for 4 months! Don t understand why Grant and Ten Cate are complaining!

  52. Tony , Stone was joking. Dont let a handful of minutes on a Chelsea blog site allow you to become as stupid as one of them.

  53. Stone may be joking but i’m sick of listening to wenger. Last week he said we dont need a defender. Wtf? He said 4 weeks earlier that it was our defence that cost us the league. I’m so frustrated because i think this team is 2 or 3 experienced signings away from greatness and he’s blowing our whole budget on a 17 and a 21 year old. Its crazy. Thats why i’m tired of listening about what he thinks about balllack, germany, chelsea, scolari. He is the the arsenal manager, he shouldn’t be commenting on that or be in position to comment on it. Let us mind our business and they can mind theirs

  54. He s paid to do it by French TV. I agree that he has had some blind spots on central defenders, keepers and maybe a spare striker. Face it , had he bought De Foe , Woodgate or Skirtel, and hung on to Diarra,in January, we would probably have won both the title and Champs League. But why on earth are we having this debate on a Chelsea blog site?

  55. This is a man who watches over 3 matches a day from Europe, Africa, South America to learn more about the game and discover new talents that are not on the cash rich clubs radar.
His views are more valued and valid than almost any one else s.
So why should he not be a commentator at a major tourno? Whose view would you value more, his or Gavin Peacocks, or Lee Dixon? And if he only stuck to talking about Arsenal at Euro 2008, what would everyone say about him then/ That he s blowing his own trumpet, or trying to talk up the price of his own players? His comments on Scolari were complementary, and his side observations on the poor timing of Chelsea s PR fair and valid

  56. piss off you chelski whore

  57. Mickey T - I might not usually approve such abusive comments but thought I’d let this one pass just to sum up your mentality. Nice work. Got any valid opinions on football btw?

  58. alan - I didn’t suggest his observations on the poor timing weren’t valid, its an opinion I’ve agreed with on more than one occasion. My question was more about his motives for saying it, because whereas, I thought it was unfair on Portugal, Wenger bringing France’s previous situation into it smacked of old wounds being re-opened. Surely if his job is to comment on Euro 2008 then that’s what he should stick to?

  59. Apologies if MickeyT is one of ours, although not sure it is for me to apologise for his behaviour.I’m sure you can cope. “Sticks and stones”etc
In truth I can t remember what French situation you re referring to, nor which old wounds.
These Euro football evenings can get drawn out, and if I was a presenter and had Wenger at my disposal, I would use opportunity to ask his views on a wide range of subjects, and hope to get reasonable answers. Wenger does have some blind spots and he can be more mischievous and self serving than some people believe he is, but its all part of the fun, its what keeps sites like these vibrant. Long may it continue. Sadly I think you ll miss out on that with Scolari and a lot of Chelsea s inputs will come from slimy Kenyon and the gutless PR puppet Greenberg. I liked what Mourinho brought to the table, and I m not saying that to wind you up because he s now gone.i suspect Scolari will be gone before his English will be good enough to make that sort of impact here.

  60. Bloody hell, you gooners take the hump pretty easy…lol

  61. Mickey T

I am a United fan and after Liverpool and Leeds, Chelsea have to rank as my most hated club. I could bore you to tears with my reasons behind this and you’d probably agree with most, if not all, of my points of view.

However, TheChelseaBlog.co.nr is a blog I check on regularly because it is written by an intelligent and thoughtful blogger. She’s obviously inlove with Chelsea, but that doesn’t mean she writes with blinded passion or ignorance.

I, for one, totally welcome the female support we get for football these days. People assume it’s a more recent thing, but I find it astonishing to see the footage of just how many females were in the crowd in United’s first game after Munich. I recently met an old lady who’d been following United since 1952, when she went along with her partner, who later became her husband, as a way of spending more time with him. He died 15 years ago and she’s more passionate about my club than pretty much any other red I’ve met… whether that’s my local pub in Manchester, The Trafford on a match day, or inside the ground.

To call an intelligent woman who writes thoughtful and interesting posts on football, a “whore” is so low rent. You put yourself with the Spurs fans who sing about Adebayor’s mam and the Liverpool fans who vandalised Old Trafford.

As a man, and as a football fan, I find you disgusting. I’d like to imagine the majority of Arsenal fans would regard you in the same way.

Whore? I can only imagine your father referred to your mother in the same way for you to call a woman that name with such ease.

  62. Scott
Nicely put, though Im not sure attention seeking Mickey T deserves the depth of coverage you gave him. I sort of apologised to Denise in case he is a Gooner, but then thought why should i apologise for the lowly behaviour of someone who claims to support the same team as me? Guess he has to try take a deep look at what bit of his past has got him to behave in this way.
Would be refreshing if he came back with a straight apology.Go on Mickey T, surprise us!

  63. My comment was abusive but certainly wasn’t irrelevant.

Just as you have a platform to try and disrespect our manager, I deserve the same opportunity to disrespect you with censure.

Now who’s self-contradictory. As for Tony, obviously sitting behind your computer you know more than Arsene Wenger dont you?

  64. very interesting . i am watchin the european championship with much interest.

keep the good work and i wish you a nice weekend .

  65. You seem to be obsessed with Wenger, so I believe you would love him to manage the Chavs, how many articles do you write about the great man, you seem to be a voyeur in your pursuit in paranoid bloggs, I would hazzard a guess you are single and have spent your entire life trying to fit in, this would explain why you seem to try and put him down, you write about him as it’s the only way you will get hits, it seems your Chav posters are far and few, don’t take it the wrong way but you don’t really get down to the nitty gritty of football, who your signings will be, what your future holds etc, etc.
Ignore the insults some Gooners make as all clubs are blessed with wankers, you removed my jokes quick enough, but that’s rival fans for you, you are the Rome of today and you will burn as your egoist owner will not get on with big Phil, he has stated the main reason was the money, that shows disrespect, no one will want to manage the Chavs as you don’t bring your young players through, the Russian crook wants a ready made team and does not have the vision or class to bring your kids through, this is an indication of his poor ambition and I believe he will hand the Chavs over to his son, talk about a lack of class.
Tell me what happened to the two young players you poached from Leeds?
This is my point, The Russian crook is like a greedy child who throws tantrum when he doesn’t get what he wants, this is your third manager since he came and you will eclipse the Spuds for mangers.
Shame really as I remember the players the Chavs had in the 70’s Osgood,Bonetti,Harris,Hollins, you had a good team now you have a souless team who want to have the highest wage, look at the greed of Lumpard and Moscow Terry, you have no one who wants to play for your team.
You will go from worse to worse and you do represent everything that is wrong about football, ask most Chavs who’s better Cashley Hole or Bridge.
You deserve every misfortune to hit you, will you sell out every game next season at home, course not, you are a manufacture team with no individuals

  66. Mickey T, funny how you don’t mention the abuse Wenger gets when we go to Old Trashyard,so squeaky clean, the woman you mention must be loaded as I believe your Season tickets have gone up by 12%, so much debt, you believe yourself to be better than anyone that’s why the Mancs are hated, you have been buying the PL since it started, and when the Chavs do the same you idiots kick up a stink, pot, kettle black, soon to be 1 billion pound in debt.Warms your heart

  67. Tony, same reason fans like you don’t show true support, you want instant success then go and support the Mancs or Chavs, moaners like you are not fans, you are bitter because you want everything now.

  68. looneygooner - the fact that I don’t like the man or agree with everything he says doesn’t make me obsessed. I wouldn’t bother with the psychoanalysis either, you’re really not very good at it. Oh, and I have plenty of Chelsea traffic through the site, whether they post or not the blog does very nicely thankyou.
Why have a go at Tony? Because he’s open-minded enough to see that Wenger has his failings? Shades of insecurity there.
And Mickey T is a gooner btw.

  69. At the risk of getting psychoanalytical, there is no doubt that from Abramivich down, Chelsea are Wenger fixated. This site betrays more than just the editors obsession with Wenger. It betrays a recognition of someone vastly superior to anything Chelsea will ever have , and still more superior to the so called Special One.Wenger is the toy Abramovich will never have, producing the quality of football your owner and fans can only dream about, and holding a set of values you cannot miss, because you are so far passed the point where you are able to crave for them.
There will never be a section on this site saying “Will Wenger be Chelsea,s next manager”. If Wenger thinks he still has a couple more jobs in him post Arsenal, he may think of Bayern Munich, possibly Barcelona, almost certainly France, but never Chelsea.
