Chelsea Youngster Pushing For A Place?

Until now, Chelsea youngster Michael Mancienne has only ever played senior football in the Championship, either at QPR or Wolves. However, with England’s squad depleted with injuries for the friendly against Germany on Wednesday, the former under-21 star has had his first call up to the senior England squad – a decision fully endorsed by Chelsea and England captain John Terry.

Terry says “Fair play to Michael. We have got a lot of players at Chelsea and he has been eager to go out and prove that he is good enough.  Myself and Lamps spoke to Stuart Pearce and he said Michael has been his best player in the under-21s. He has got a bright future ahead of him.”

Mancienne is on loan at Wolves until next month and Terry says I went on loan to Nottingham Forest and it is a good experience. He will gain from the experience and his form has been fantastic for Wolves. You go out and you have to stand on your own two feet.”

Whilst on the young Chelsea man’s future at Chelsea, Terry suggests “I don’t want to put too much pressure on the lad but we all realise he is one for the future. He could come back and be in the Chelsea Side, quite possibly. He has been eager to break into the squad. It is very unfortunate for all the young players at Chelsea that we have got such a big squad.” Even more unfortunate for Terry could be the fact Mancienne could end up vying for his place.

Mancienne himself, describes his call-up as “every boy’s dream”. The 20 year-old defender says “It’s fantastic to be in the squad. I would love it if I had the chance to play next to John. When I was at Chelsea I used to speak to some of the first-team players on the training ground, but not too often. I’d like to think that one day I can play regular Premier League football, but Wolves is a great stepping stone.  I am at Wolves until the end of December and I don’t know if the loan will be extended. Long-term I would like to go back there [Chelsea] because I have been with the club since I was a kid.  Now it’s a good feeling to be top of the table and playing good football. I am thriving on the pressure playing first team football brings and this is only inspiring me to work harder. These are exciting times. To go from Chelsea reserves to top of the Championship and to England is a massive thrill.”

It’d be good to see him at least get a run-out tomorrow night.
