Post Southend Woes

Y’know what? Sod the match review because I’m really not in the mood.

What the bloody hell was that about yesterday? Southend? We can’t even get a result against Southend now? I don’t even know where to start.

I think I’ve been pretty lenient with Chelsea so far this season and considering my reaction to some of our football under Grant last term, I’ve been more than accommodating when it comes to the new Chelsea boss. In fact, if Grant had got some of the results Scolari has so far, I can only imagine the sort of venom I’d have been spewing.

So, I’m going to vent my spleen a bit now – without apologies.

Yesterday was yet another game where we dominated possession and ended up with sod all to show for it and we just can’t keep doing that. It’s getting beyond a joke now. I mean, fair enough, we haven’t always exactly killed sides off. Many-a-time we’ve made do with a 1-0, but at least then we could hold onto that lead, however ugly it was. To concede in the manner we did yesterday was bloody ridiculous.

And why were we in that position anyway? Yes, their keeper might’ve had a say in it but we had chance after chance go begging. If we’re not clinical enough to make our dominant possession count then the club needs to do something about it. I don’t know about anyone else but I’m sick to death of hearing we’ve got a good enough squad. As far as I was concerned, it wasn’t good enough at the start of the season and it certainly doesn’t look good enough now.

So what are the club going to do about it? We’ve already sold Wayne Bridge and there’s the possibility of either Ivanovic or Alex going as well, are they seriously suggesting they’ll just bank the money and struggle on with a squad that’s clearly not cutting the mustard?

And while I’m on about the squad, what was the point in Scolari naming all the youngsters and not bloody playing them? Di Santo didn’t even get ten minutes and Sinclair got even less. If the side out there looked like they were up for it, then fair enough, but clearly they couldn’t buy a second goal to make the game safe so why stick with it? Di Santo wasn’t far off making an impact even in the short time he got, but he’s been out injured for ages, so in the stint he was given, he’d need to be bloody superman to turn the game around.

And that leads nicely into my next moan. If we’re desperate for a second goal – and clearly we were – why is our top goal scorer sat on his arse when his replacement couldn’t give a toss less about the club? I know it’s nice to rest players but when he’s the one who’s put the ball in the back of the net this season, what message does it give to him when he makes way for a non-firing motormouth for the full 90 minutes?

And before anyone has a pop at me for slating them, let me just point out some facts. We might well be second in the table, but that’s off the back of a load of away wins against no-one in particular. We’ve had chances to put daylight between us and the scousers and blown it every time. Any big game we’ve had, we’ve taken sod all from and getting through the group stages of the Champions League was far from convincing.

So if I sound a bit narked, it’s because I can honestly see us ending up as potless as we did last season – and I’d been mug enough to hope for better from Scolari.

  1. This article is totally right, we have no cash to spend, the only money we did have, he spent it on a has been Deco. He did that so he has someone on his side when things go wrong. Big Phil realises he has no money, his job when he took over and now is probably totally different to what he thought, he probably wishes he never took the job. He is lacking passion to turn it round which is effecting the players that care, the rest of them are probably laughing like Drog. So were buggered to be honest, and its starting to make me feel ill. Bye Bye Chelsea i’ll come back when were not such a joke, it made me violent yesterday towards my expensive tv, were a joke, and I don’t want it costing me any money on replacing things for my house.

  2. I’ll have to support nick on this one. The chelsea i see now is becoming the laughing stock of 2009 (of course with a little help from 2008). Yes, we’ve all heard the same old song about how good a squad we’ve got but we all know that’s bollocks if you can’t even win games consistently. The avram grant era was boring but at least we had results & yes i know we didn’t win squat.

The team we have now is the same team that was doing so well at the beginning of the season & i refuse to believe that we were winning those matches then because the other clubs were weaker than ours. Wrong, cause if that were true, why could this same team not get a decent result against a small team like southend, the club that knocked us out of the carling cup (can’t even remember their name), fulham etc…?

    Yet another riddle.

Besides the obvious fact that chelsea needs to buy themselves a consistent striker & a playmaker, i think this team has what it takes to make themselves champions. I also believe had carvalho not suffered from injury early on in the season, we would not have lost or conceded so many games/goals. We certainly know how many times his talent has saved us from hopeless cases.

If anyone tells you that there’s no dressing room problem, they’ve left their heads in the clouds for too long! Some of our troubles is also coming from there.

And here i thought i wasn’t going to write much.

    I REALLY FEAR FOR CHELSEA.

  3. I’m in total agreement with this report. Performances have been woeful from us this season and I really think that Scolari isn’t cutting it. We have become a team that is easy to play at home. And Mourinho probably is drinking Grappa and laughing at what we have replaced him with. Scolari, with his poor selection and his reluctance (or inability) to convert to a Plan B, I think this guy is a chancer, I really do. His joviality in press conferences also belies the fact that he just seems out of his depth.

  4. Hi All, Im Dan.

Can i just start to say this, I used to hate football until about a year and a half ago.

I saw a chelsea match and i liked it, and i kept watching chelsea matches and reading all the information and i was absolutly fascinated by the team, I supported them..
Ive tried not to miss games if i can help it (i work shift work) And even if i do i have alerts on my phone !

I come on this site for information about chelsea so i can gain better knowledge of this club.

Since ive seen this premiership start, At first i thought we was doing well. But latly id say the last.. 7 matches, We have sunk severly ! I agree so much with this report. Everyday i try to find on this site good news. and every match i see i try to give a positive side!.. But.. My question is..

Chelsea.. What the hell are you doing? If a guy lke me who doesnt know as much as u guys about football start being disapointed by whats going on specially against southend.. then we are in serious trouble. And we are vsin manchester united on 11th january..

    Come back Chelsea..

    Thanks for reading :) Dan

  5. Good to see I’m not the only pessimist for a change, lol. Our form and apparent inability to finish games off has been going on for a while now and our defence is in disarray - particularly in the latter stages of games it seems. I just don’t see how Scolari’s going to turn it around - and whats more, he doesnt seem all that worried either.

Nick R - I agree Scolari probably has regrets about taking the job on although Im sure the pay packet lessens his pain.

And Dan - I only wish there was the occasional bit of good news to give you although sadly it seems to be in short supply at Stamford Bridge lately.

  6. Hi Chelsea D

But im gna give my support to chelsea all the way.

    Keep Cool Dan

  7. I am reading a lot of negative stuff here about Chelsea football club…I think we/you expect too much!
I watched this club from being a wee boy until I was nearly thirty and only ever saw them win the full members cup!
I am unable to see them now due to living too far away and now I have season tickets at Ibrox….another club with overpaid, underperforming players.
I don’t mean watch from my armchair either!
I watched chelsea lose to Wigan when they were lower leagues…I watched them beat Bolton 4-3 after being 3-0 down and I was their when we beat Bolton away 1-0 to stay up in Division 2!
I think the older team players had more heart and courage and played for the club rather than the wages.
How can we expect so much, when these players earn high wages so easily….John Bumstead,Joey Jones, Graham Roberts,Pat Nevin, are players that played with passion and for the club and to entertain….and I am sorry to say not many of todays team measure up….they maybe technically better and have outrageous salaries….but thay don’t come to the party when needed!
Don’t expect so much from these overpaid primadonnas and you will not be disappointed….instead vote with your feet, don’t watch them, protest, try and reduce the salaries and maybe then we will get players that are really interested in football and the fans instead of feeding their egos with large salaries and other spin off deals!
    Rant over…

  8. Peter - rousing speech there and of course all perfectly spot on, only trouble is football’s a business these days whether we like it or not.
I suppose I still have this romantic notion of Chelsea playing good football AND winning, failing that, just a bit of pride would do but unfortunately none of the above seems to be happening right now.

  9. A buisness is controlled by its customers, but not apparently the premiership which has the ability to controls its customers…..because they are willing to get the same stale product year in year out?
They are controlled with clever advertising….which fails to explain what is actually in the box when you buy it….or on the box so to speak!
It is the most predictable and boring league in the world??
Everyone knows from 4 teams….one of them will win and although we get some decent games..the end product is baically the same….year in year out!
My goodness it is nearly as predictable as the SPL and how boring is that league???
We need a radical overhaul and the fans have the power….we need financial controls..salary caps, transfer controls and an equal spread of the wealth and maybe our league would be as competitve as the american footy and aussie rules leagues, where there is real competition and not the same old, same old all the time….with the rich getting richer and small clubs struggling to compete in totally unfair buisness.
Mark my words, if something is not done soon…our league will go the way of the Italian League and we will become the laughing stock and no amount of advertising will get us out of that one!
I watched Singapore v Vietnam recently with a small gate fee….result was not predictable, all fans sat in harmony, and all 50,000 enjoyed the product!
Schoolkids were allowed in free….we used to do that in the UK years ago….but many would not remember this, but this was at a time when our product was competitive!!!
The sad thing is as a soccer enthusiast….I loved it and the product was nowhere near as boring as the overhyped premiership and long may it continue..I got what i PAID FOR….and how many in the Premiership can say that……truth now please!
