Wenger Must Know Something Chelsea Don’t About Transfer Window

Arsene Wenger’s a joker isn’t he?

I mean, he’s come out and said you’d have to be in ‘dreamland’ if you think Arsenal will be lashing out big money in the transfer window – no big surprise there seeing as we hear it from him before every transfer window.

The joke is though, he insists there’s a few clubs who can still afford to ‘buy success’ in the Premier League and whilst most of us would see Citeh as the powerhouse in spending now, he continues to point to Chelsea when he talks about big spenders. That’s a laugh in itself these days.

The Arsenal boss says “Chelsea have not built a stadium and they lose £100m per year – how do you imagine you can deal with that at Arsenal Football Club without going bankrupt? We have to be responsible.  I do not understand how you can compare with that. The other clubs, except for Manchester United, lose money.  We have a specific budget which is not as big as I have read in the newspapers, some ridiculous amounts of money that are completely crazy. But we will try to use it wisely and well if we can.”

Fair play to him if he’s happy with what he’s got. I mean, they seem to be way off the pace for the title this season and they’ll be doing without their new captain for a while, but Wenger insists “This team is together, getting stronger and stronger – but what we need to focus on is continually developing and not live in dreamland where we are linked with players of £30m or £40m because that is not realistic.  We have a very, very good squad and we will go for an exceptional talent only – but if it is just to have one player more, we will not do it.”

Personally I’d have thought he’d be wanting to qualify for the Champions League again, but like I say, fair play.

  1. Oh how I love the short sighted Chel$ki fans.

We’ll be around in 15 years.

    Will you?

  2. I think you’ve missed the point. What you going to do when your money dries up? You’ll be wishing you had a board like Arsenal.

  3. I’m lost. Chelsea do lose money and Arsenal cannot do what Chelsea does. That’s the Arsenal philosophy. This has nothing to do with you so why are you on about it?

  4. Our team sucks, our owner has to choose between us and his yacht. Let us moan at Arsene Wenger. Chelsea….the Bonehead capital of the world.

  5. What is wrong with what he says? Pointing to city to make that point would be riduculous as, before this window, they had only had ONE AFTERNOON of transfer time with all their money. He makes a point about the longer term and so looks at the club that has been doing it for years- chelsea. This article’s completely pointless, try considering the many problems at your own club before scraping the barrel to write bollocks about other clubs.

  6. Stick to spunking money on every player available and still maintain that you’ll be self sufficient by 2010.

But like i say, fair play!!!!!

  7. petty?
Yeah, fairplay to the 1-1 draw against Southend

  8. I don’t really see the problem with what he has said. It’s true that without Abramohvic’s money Chelsea’s debt would have seen them in a worse state than Leeds Utd. If you don’t have the money you can’t buy players just for the sake of it. Champions league is important because of the money it brings in. If you go bankrupt just to get champions league football you’ve shot yourself in the foot.

I don’t think Wenger has a problem with Chelsea’s spending and not Man city’s. It’s just that Man city haven’t had to show their accounts since they have become big spenders, whereas Chelsea have reported annual losses for several years.

  9. yes he definately knows something chelsea dont after all he didnt sign big money flops like, shevshechko, kezhman, wright philips, boloruz etc

  10. so what’s wrong with that statement? chelsea might not spend big this jan but that doesn’t mean they’re not big spender. i mean, spending a few hundred millions to buy the league surely qualify you as big spender, no?

  11. And the point of this post is…?

  12. Seems Chelsea loose £100m a year, before signings.?

  13. Im not sure if that is correct tho

  14. we could always adopt the Chelscum approach and pay wages at 75% of our generated revenue. I think that’s where the £100m loss per year comes from.

  15. Arsene will be in a job come the summer, Big Phil won’t be. There’s a prediction for ’09.

  16. “he continues to point to Chelsea when he talks about big spenders. That’s a laugh in itself these days” how much does john terry, micheal ballack, franck lampard earn again, i suppose u pay for that through ur 40/45000 attendance eh?.

oh yeah 16 million on a left back – yeah u guys are really operating on boltons budget these days i see.

and didnt we beat u at the bridge with a u21 midfield?

how olds ur midfield? ow much they cost?

while u got a billionaire supporting ur debts u are the same as man citeh – a rich mans play thing – fair play to u guys but dont try hidding the facts!!!

  17. Wenger does know something Chelsea doesn’t. It’s called sustainability. How much is it CFC owes Abramovitch in interest free loans? £568 million or thereabouts.

Don’t worry though, if he ever calls in that chip, you will have 18 months to pay him.

  18. Sorry but it is correct – your outgoings ie wages and upkeep bill far outweight your incomings. ie seat receipts.

  19. Blah blah blah, no one really takes Chelsea serious anyway. Anything they win doesn’t count in most peoples eyes.

  20. imo he means that arsenal do not have the same spending power as chelsea and should therefore be silly (for arsenal) to try and compete with the likes of chelsea. fair comment imo, though chelsea have also started spending ‘wisely’ lately.

  21. LB – of course it has something to do with Chelsea supporters, it’s Chelsea he’s talking about isnt it? Which was actually the point – he’s talking about this month’s transfer window and yet makes no mention of the richest club in the world, instead chossing to harp on about us when time and again the club have made it clear our spending days are over.

  22. Doesn’t mention you as “big spenders” at all. Read the quote.

“Chelsea have not built a stadium and they lose £100m per year”

City have moved into a new stadium fairly recently no?

No need to be defensive lads, you’re doing just fine.

  23. Can I just ask where Chavski would be if they hadn’t been rescued by Abramovich? Probably languishing in a lower league somewhere. And when he gets bored and pulls out, where will that leave you? Well below Arsenal I would suggest.

What will you do in a couple of years when Drogba, Lampard, Ballack, Deco, Terry, Anelka, Carvalho etc etc are picking up their bus passes as they’re all verging on 30 now? Keep spending and spending like before to replace them all? Face it Chelsea are over the hill.

Still at least you’ve got a home record you can fall back on. Oh maybe not actually.

  24. There’s only one thing worse than being talked about Chelsea D, and that is not being talked about. Your lot hoovered up loads of players who were/are quite happy to trouser the cash and polish the pine when there was plenty of the chairman’s money about before he lost it all.

It’s a problem your club made for itself. Well it is now, as you can’t afford to buy anyone of note without selling. City will be talked about in the same way your club is. I’m mean, they are following in your footsteps and getting the likes of SWP, Bridge and Parker.

Give ‘em a window or two and they will probably take Fat Frank and the King of the Chavs off your hands as well.

  25. Gunnersaurus- Chelsea Village, the holding company that owned the club were 14 days away from defaulting on a loan repayment that would have meant bankruptcy for the club. We were in negotiations to get Terry that summer. And then up turned Abramovitch with all his stolen money.

Could have been worse though- he could have bought Spuds!

  26. Gunnersaurus – I dread to think where we could’ve ended up if Abramovich hadn’t stepped in when he did although I still suspect that if he does walk away, the way football is these days there’d be another big buyer waiting. Obviously if that doesn’t happen then we’ll be buggered.

As for a couple of years when they all pick up bus passes – I wouldn’t even give it that long tbh. Our form this season has a lot to do with the fact that Abramovich refuses to spend money, forcing the manager to make to with an ageing side. Hence, my picking up on Wenger referring to us when he talks about competing in the transfer market – because to put it simply – Chelsea aren’t in the transfer market.

  27. It is a chilling fact that when Roman decided he’s had enough fun wasting all his millions in his toy.
Most probably he’ll just sell it off to some middle east, thai owners…that’s where chelsea is heading…yeah?

  28. Let’s face it the the gooners are in a financial strait-jacket for many years to come as they try to re- finance the money owing on the Emirates, as well trying to sell the flats built at Highbury, while the property market goes down the toilet.
Chelsea may have spent a lot of Abramovich’s money, but they don’t have the sharks circling around them as the gooners have.
If anyone will go bust it is the gooners, following the inglorious path of West Ham.

  29. Dov,

you really dont believe that do you?

You dont know what will happen in the property market long term and the fact is Arsenal are living within their means which is a very good business model to have, no? It is however obvious that your owner is not spending money on the team, no speculation on long term needed there. If he leaves your team will be belly up in an instant while Arsenal death would be much slower it would seem, no?

  30. Hey gov are u on some crack. We are selling both the stadium naming rights and highbury flats not buying you dumb shit

  31. Dov, on January 5th, 2009 at 15:15.

Go back to school and learn maths and business logic cause that is one of the dumbest statements i seen.

we depend on attendances, transfers and TV money to support us (we can pay bak loans through these means) – u rely on one guy dipping into his bin cause u spend above ur means -do the maths -see the logic. given that he has lost shit loads of cash already, do you think he is willing to piss more cash into the wind on chelsea.

good luck when he goes !!!

  32. Cant believe after drawing with a pub team at the bridge you’ll have the nerve to write this nonsense knowin it will show up in arsenal’s newsnow headlines

  33. Dov, on January 5th, 2009 at 15:15 // Your “Logic” really amuses me. Our creditrating is the best out of all teams in the premiership I actually think we have the best creditrating out of all fotball clubs in the world. And although it sometimses hurtys when we miss out on gems such as Ribery .. to higher bidders .. it feels damn good to know the club will be around in 5 years time. i’ll raise my young son as an Arsenalfan .. Were will chelsea be in 5 years??

  34. With all the Arsenal Injuries and bad play they are still slightly behind russian FC. With Chelsea’s current form, I think Arsenal will catch them.

  35. There is no need to fight about money and transfers…it is not as if they listen to us now is it?

Regarding Arsenals finances, they are quite secure to put it mildly. They owe £320 million on two loans, one of which is the stadium itself (£250 million) and the other is for building and completing the Highbury development (£70 million)

When the development is finished and sold, it will sell for £280 million in total (55 flats are being kept and not sold…for which reason the board knows?)

Let us all be honest and realise that premium flats like this will always hold their money, especially in an area like Finsbury Park which is Zone 1/2 and close to the city – so the credit crunch will not affect their prices.

I wish it does as I want to buy a flat there but a one bed for £400,000 is based on the area and nostalgic value etc. Imagine a flat where Chelsea is then…this is so much cheaper! I am sure we all agree that at least it is not in Tottenham..where they are worth nothing and where no one would want to live….

Look at Liverpool, they have stopped building their stadium! Spuds think they can build a replica Emirates…who will loan them £400 million in this economic climate? Then they are going to redevelop their ground to make flats…at the market rate they are always half the price of Finsbury Park which is then half the price of Chelsea etc.

All I can say is that I am glad the board invested before and built the stadium. It cannot be done now and if it means we cannot compete now financially, so be it.

Let us all be realistic. As much as I hate to admit it!

  36. Dov, if by Sharks you mean Usmanov, he is in the same position as Abramovitch fianancially speaking, which is why he has not upped his stake thus far to the 30 % level. If he did this he would have to make an offer for the rest of the shares of the club. These are now trading around 8.5k per share, which is well below what he was paying in the summer at the top of a market peak he created. I’m not that worried about him. I’m not worried about our debt either. We get 3 million quid for every home game. The debt repayment is budgeted at 45% of capacity. So even without the CL money we can and a substantial drop in attendance, we can cope. Also in last years account we have net cash deposits of over £100 million.

  37. Arsene will be in a job come the summer, Big Phil won’t be. There’s a prediction for ‘09

chelsea will be in the champions league next year ….
dont think arsenal will be. Saving money and losing out onn the champions league is shooting yourself in the foot whilst running backwards

  38. I know Arsenal will be in the CL and will remain there for many years to come. I think the question is will Chelsea be able to stay in the CL when your owner leaves? or even in the PL for that matter. I would be worried if I was a Chelsea fan, it could all come crumbling down rather quickly.

  39. I keep asking are ye the New Leeds without the supporters?
Age profile of the team is getting on without any real “young” players to step in!
Wenger is say he cannot buy the same players as you the Chavs did but will buy players at a younger age and turn them into real players. I think Arsenal will get to the CL this year but will the 2nd half of the season see Chelsea nosedive? If the home form keep as it is and more teams go at ye away from home you might be 6 or 7th at the end of the season below Everton and Aston Villa and the mega rich Man City who will step in to buy the top players under Chelsea’s noses like they have already started to do. When you bought the league title you did not see anyway to go but up but now you are heading down, down

  40. I must admit that with Abramovitch’s wealth that such riches would never be topped.

Then the big oil money has turned up at City. 500 Billion quid will get you a lot of players. Robinho for a start. Bet you lot had forgotten what it was like to be gazumped for a player!

Mercenary/Pine polishing watch will now be focussed on Manchester.

    What? Oh.

    I mean both sides.

  41. haha chelsea i have heard that now u will be charging players for meals on training ground and for tickets it looks like u are going down chelseafc.arsenal will always be in champions league they are a healthy club who operate on its own resources but what about u.it looks like roman is leaving then what, relegation struggle and most of the gloryhunters fans that u have will run away this is a realistic possibility fools

  42. LIES LIES AND EVEN MORE LIES. WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT WENGER.EVEN THO CHELSEA ARE HIGHT FOR NOW. THERE STRUGGLING WITH INCONSISTENCY NOW.MANU WIN PREM. ASRSENAL MAYB CHAMPIONS OR FA CHELSEA LEAVE WITH NONE UL C

  43. Looks like abramavic is already bored, no money to spend?

I know alot of Chelvski fans who think its all about to crumble. If he goes then you will be in administration within 2 years and gone, then you or your childern will want a good, well run team to support which will be Arsenal.

  44. After the hard fought 1-1 draw with Southend Chelsea seem on the way back to top form. It’s a pity that they can’t even fill their ground against the bigger teams these days as Scolari’s threatened “beautiful football” seems have hit the buffers somewhat. The truth, which cannot be denied even by the most ardent Chelsea fan, is that the success they have had has been entirely funded by a Russian gangster and his ill-gotten gains and now these are drying up. Another year of recession and he will be looking to sell the club. Face it, it surely must be tedious spending all that money and still watching shite football. I think the thrill that was Mourinho is gone.

  45. Bored Roman – Chelsea wouldn’t go into administration. If he goes, he’ll find a buyer first – he’s a businessman and they don’t write off debts that easily. But whatever happened, trust me, nothing could possibly be bad enough to make me or my kids turn to Arsenal.

  46. Chelsea D, your business sense is naive and since when have your lot cared about us and v/v? I remember when we clipped you at Cardiff in 2002, your lot had surrendered before the game and slunk away to your pubs after the game rather sheepishly.

  47. It’s interesting to see Chelsea fans finally waking up to the possibility of Abromovich walking out. It’s pointless to spectulate further on how things will turn out after he has left as this would depend on the economic environment at the time. Were it to happen in the next year or so Chelsea would be harder to sell than Newcastle with your unmanageable year on year losses. If it were to happen in several years then hey most of the current team would have moved on anyway so who can say.

  48. Wwhat would you do when all your big money stars retire and Roman is not there? “The great” Chelsea will go back to their roots and will be fighting for 12 place. While the young arsenal would became the greatest team in earth.
    jajajajajajaja
    Sorry is the true
