Ivanovic Getting Ahead Of Himself?

Despite Chelsea suggesting after Cudicini’s move to Spurs there’d be no more comings or goings at Stamford Bridge during this transfer window, according to recent reports that might not necessarily be the case.

There’s been ongoing speculation about Branislav Ivanovic for ages but according to his agent, today will be decisive in terms of his future.

Even with John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho playing the hokey-cokey in and out of the side this season, Ivanovic still hasn’t had much of a look in with Alex used as cover. And whilst we would have expected that, maybe the Serbian was promised otherwise when he signed, because he’s clearly not happy to settle in as a squad player.

Fiorentina seem to have given up on any hopes they had of signing the defender, although according to his agent, Vlado Borozan, it could all still be sorted today. It might come as a surprise to Chelsea, but Borozan suggests “The deal is at a decisive phase and by tomorrow (Friday) we will know how it will finish. My partner will be in London tomorrow to talk further with Chelsea. We have already reached an agreement in principle with Fiorentina for a five-year contract.”

Mind you, bearing in mind Ivanovic actually has a contract with us, should his agent really be admitting he’s sorted one out somewhere else?

  1. The way these deals work out is strange to me. In any of our US sports, if a player was working out a contract with a team while still under contract with another team, there would be hell to pay. Tampering rules would kick in and the team trying to take the player would be penalized.

  2. Spektral - for the majority I’m sure this would be the case. When it comes to us though, it’d seem a bit ‘pot, kettle, black’ though. :)

  3. What it means is that Chelsea have given permission for talks to take place, but haven’t fully decided on going ahead with the deal until it’s clear Carvalho isn’t out more long term.
