Man City Struggling To Spend Their Money – And Terry Doesn’t Want It

You have to laugh at Man City eh?

Thinking back to the day that saw them become the richest club in the world and the days that followed, you could only imagine we’d see the sort of spending that would make Roman Abramovich’s arrival at Stamford Bridge pale into insignificance. Anything we’d spent was about to look like loose change once City got the chance to launch their assault during a transfer window right?

I mean, they got Robinho within their first 24 hours of arriving, such was the pull they had, and even if Berbatov was never in any doubt which side of Manchester he was signing for, the Arabs would still sign whoever else they wanted in time – which brings us back to this transfer window.

We all know they planned to buy Kaka – and we all know the outcome there. But what about the rest of their hit-list? After all, Hughes was told to simply name who he considered to be the best players in the world in every position and his bosses would pull out all the stops to deliver them. So, Buffon, Yaya Toure, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lassana Diarra, David Silva, David Villa, where are they? Why is it that the richest club in the world have signed Wayne Bridge, Nigel de Jong and Craig Bellamy instead? Would it be because the money alone isn’t an attractive enough proposition for the top players?

Fortunately, the answer to that is yes because whilst the talk about them trying to lure Frank Lampard away from us appears to have been just that, it seems the reports about them making a move for John Terry had a bit more substance.

According to The Times, Peter Kenyon was approached by City’s executive chairman, with the intention of making an offer Chelsea couldn’t refuse. Although, City seem to be finding out that even their sort of money can’t buy them everything because Kenyon did refuse, making it clear the Chelsea captain isn’t for sale.

The player himself – despite the promise of a pay rise on top of the £135,000 he already earns a week at Chelsea – is said to have been pretty relieved offers aren’t being considered at any price because he’s happy to see out his career at Stamford Bridge.

Maybe he just prefers playing in the top half of the table eh?

  1. You do realise that Hughes has a 100 million budget for this window (for transfer fees and wages)? Once Given signs that is almost 100 million (including wages) and the budget done. This is not counting the Kaka offer which the board said would be a ‘marquee’ signing and not effect the budget. All along the media (and many Chelsea fans) have been saying we can’t just buy ‘superstars’ we should buy solid players and work from there. Now we’re doing that we still get bad press for it. We’re in a no win situation. Whatever we do someone posts garbage about it. As for the Terry ‘offer’ it was a passing comment during the Bridge negotiations – a feeler if you will to see what the situation would be and nothing more. No offer has been made.

  2. Bluenose – welcome to our world, lol.

The trouble, as I pointed out, was the names bandied about followed by Kaka clearly turning you down – as Im sure he did us as well. So the fact that you’ve now signed players like Bridge, Bellamy, Given etc, looks to be more about them simply being the players who agreed to sign rather than being the players the Arabs actually had in mind.

Of course, these are good, solid players but will they see you breaking into the top four?
