Bosingwa Gets Lucky

The game against Liverpool was, from a football perspective, very forgettable. However, as we all know, there was the odd decision that made it stand out.

Frank Lampard’s red card was obviously memorable because it was one of the daftest of the season and Chelsea have duly appealed. Mind you, the fact that it was clearly not a red card offence might be clear to all concerned and we would therefore fully expect the FA to overturn the decision. But this is the FA we’re talking about and how often do they do what we expect them to?

Take Chelsea’s Jose Bosingwa for instance, or more specifically, his dropkick on Yossi Benayoun. I mean really, is there anyone who honestly thought he’d get anything less than a 3-match ban for that? It was a bloody disgrace – and he’s got off with it!

Following the incident, Bosingwa stated “I apologise for what I did and it was never my intention to hurt him.  I know I was wrong and I apologise.” But if that’s the sort of thing our right-back does when it isn’t his intention to hurt someone, then I can only say I wouldn’t fancy getting on his bad side.

Anyway, despite this blatant assault on an opponent, the FA have confirmed no action will be taken, with a statement on the official website suggesting “The FA has confirmed that no disciplinary action will be taken against Chelsea defender Jose Bosingwa.  Bosingwa was involved in an incident with Liverpool’s Yossi Benayoun during the Premier League match at Anfield on February 1. Referee Mike Riley has informed The FA that, while he did not see the incident himself, it was seen by his assistant Mo Matadar. No action was taken against Bosingwa by the officials.  Under the Fifa laws of the game, The FA is prohibited from taking disciplinary action when incidents are seen at the time by the match officials.”

So, with Bosingwa getting away with something that happened directly in front of Riley’s assistant, we now wait and see what the FA do about the punishment that was dished out unfairly.
