Scolari’s Sacking: Reaction

As seems to be the case all too often at Chelsea, we’re manager-less again and everyone’s talking about us for all the wrong reasons.

Former Chelsea manager John Hollins has reacted to the news of Scolari’s sacking by saying: “You can’t knock him for what he’s done internationally but club football is a different ball game.  I feel he couldn’t adapt to the every day thing (of club management). Internationally he’s had time to look at a game and pick a team but (Chelsea) is instant.  Every day is very, very busy and I have to say I don’t think there was enough in there from him to carry it through.”

“He had to have the players every day - some players have massive egos, it’s the case all over the country. But Chelsea are a big side and he had to pick the team that could win a match.  I’ve seen five games where things didn’t change a great deal - and they couldn’t beat the lesser sides.  They were winning home games and had that fabulous unbeaten home record but suddenly they looked an ordinary team.  He was the man who was going to put the discipline into everything. I feel he appeared to be quite relaxed on the line, yet he shouted and screamed when he was doing his international bit.  Someone coming in has to be positive and get that winning back into the pattern again - Chelsea need that - they need to lift the supporters.”

Meanwhile, on the next Chelsea manager, former Chelsea defender Ron Harris believes West Ham manager Zola and his assistant Steve Clarke  would be the fans’ choice.  Harris says “I think that if it was a choice with the supporters, I think that 90 per cent would like to get Zola and Stevie Clarke.”

However, former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin thinks Chelsea shouldn’t rush into finding a replacement for Scolari, suggesting “His popularity has been plummeting the past few weeks.  The question is, who is going to be able to do it with a squad that is clearly not strong enough.  They’ve had a few changes over the past year or two. Since Jose Mourinho left it’s not really been settled.  This is a club that a year ago was one of the biggest in world and quite clearly it seems to have gone downhill quite quickly.  I hope for Chelsea’s sake they don’t have a knee-jerk reaction and dive for the first name that comes into their mind, the first big name that becomes available.  They need to give it an awful lot of thought and maybe consider someone that isn’t the biggest name in the world.”

  1. I think this was something that had to happen sooner rather then later from my point of view . To me Scolari just lack the hunger, and he seemed too old. There is a saying that goes, you cant teach an old dog new tricks, and that seems even more true after this. Scolari added alot of great things to our play, he added goals, but slowly the very core that mourinho build in with his very own hands, the gritty defensive style vanished. we Need a new YOUNG coach that knows how to go forward but also backwards, to win those gritty games that will win us the title in the next great years to come. Having said all this, i hope the Chelsea board room knows, that this very appointment could very well maybe break the name of the club, if they don’t give the next man in the hot seat more time, then Chelsea could be in trouble!

  2. Not really surprised Scolari is gone, was on the cards for a few weeks (perhaps months even), can’t say that I’m all that upset by the decision, he was too soft, the players were not playing for him (thought that was going to change after the Stoke game), his substitutions were daft to say the least, rearly gave the young players opportunities. Of the crop of umeployed managers, Frank Rijkaard & Roberto Mancini are the ones most capable of steering the club around pretty quickly, not sure who they have in mind, Deschamps or Zola/Clake may have been approached, don’t know if Zola is ready or up to the task of needing wins almost week-in-week out, his start at Spammers wasn’t the best, but starting to bear fruit now, not sure that we’ll be as patient.

  3. any manager they bring in we will still have most of the problems we have. Granted Scolari wasn’t reacting to the situation as fast as we all wanted, but seriously how many tools did he have to fix anything?

During the transfer window, before he even says anything the club comes out and says we won’t be bringing anyone in, when even then it was obvious we were sourly lacking, in the face of a team like United or even Liverpool. Is Drogba gonno be transformed all of a sudden? will Kalou learn how to shoot? will Malouda who has never performed well all of a sudden be shown the light? Will Ballack, Anelka, Terry, Carvalho, Deco all be 25 again? Lets face it we have a crappy team right now, we can’t compete for anything with the likes of Man U, Liver pool and hey even Aston Villa. We can’t beat a Team like Hull, a Team that West Brom at least manages to score against. We have no mentality at the club for creating anything lasting. We got rid of Jose instead of supporting him and appreciating the success he gave us we replaced him with Grant!!!!! Grant goes Scolari comes, finally someone with enough credibility and we don’t support him, we give him a crappy team and sack him in Feb. What were we expecting to happen this season? invest little, restructure our club to be “self sufficient” and win everything? are we dreaming or what?

All this i think is the problem of having someone like Abrahamovic at the club. He meddles way too much!!! i was happy when Scolari came because at least with his level of experience/age/credibility he could stop the meddling and finally start to give us the basis of something great again. Now he is gone and even better Grant is rumored to come back!!!

this is a club with a long history, it shouldn’t be anyone’s toy!!!

and CHELSEA D as much as you though it was such a good move to give our only cover for free to spurs, how good did it feel to have Hillario in goal for the Hull match?!
I’m not saying it wasn’t “nice thing to do to” to let him go, but shouldn’t the club come first? in decisions like that?! and I really think your prediction for the rest of the season needs to be reexamined!

i’m sorry i think at the end sacking scolari does more to destroy our credibility than his, he will always be a world cup winning coach and we will be the team he didn’t give him half a chance.

  4. This had to happen. The squad isn’t producing so you have to do something to try and stop the bleeding. Does this maybe quiet the rumors about RA’s lost love of the club?

  5. A lot is being said about an ageing squad and about the lack of big money signings but Scolari’s biggest mistake was not giving youth a chance. Exciting youngsters like Stoch, Mancienne, Kakuta, Di Santo, Sinclair etc etc could have been brought in. But no he stuck with the likes of Deco, Malouda, Drogba and others who are clearly out of form.

We just have to hope the Board take their time and don’t appoint another international manager (Hiddink) or Grant (because he won’t lift the team). It has to be someone with club experience, someone who can motivate the players and most importantly someone who will be given time to re-build.

  6. anyone who comes in will be under pressure to provide results fast, i think if he had stayed at least he would be in more of a position to give a chance to the youth than anyone else they bring in.

  7. HH - to be fair, there’d been no changes under Scolari for quite some time and we really are now in a position where whoever comes in has a rescue mission on their hands just to qualify for Europe. I think to an extent its harsh on Scolari because he certainly didnt have the same resources available to him as our previous managers under Roman’s reign but when youre hailed as a ‘world class manager’, surely you have to do a better job than he did?

  8. Funny thing is there are many managers in the premiership doing a similar job and they have not been sacked…Arsene Wenger etc.
Managers of clubs who expect…are in danger.
Portsmouth expect to stay up and we expect to win all the time…..do we expect too much?
Zola was a great player but has no experience, Clarke a great no.2 and how would they feel to get sacked after a short time?
    I smell a Sven in the air…

  9. As a outsider looking in, I find the decision strange. There is no transfer window now, and can only see a “short term” replacement come in until the end of the season. I have followed the EPL with entrige over the past 4-5 seasons but did notice PS struggled with the day to day running and team changes. There is no doubt about his credentials but club football is clearly different from International. I wish Chelsea all the best in finding a new manager but fear its a poisoned chalice if Roman A cant lose his business head and appreaciated what football is all about. The EPL will be poorer without a strong Chelsea team and Manu, Liverpool, Arsenal and to an extent this season AV will agree that for the EPL to be seen as the best league you MUST have a strong core. My opinion who best for the job Zola and Clarke but you may find Grant back or Machini. Good luck to who ever it is and lets hope they get a bit longer than FS!!!!!!

  10. Where’s your manager gone?….where’s your manager gone?
    Far, far away…
Where’s your money goin?…Where’s your money goin?
    Far, far away
Looks like your fans ar’all goin the same way…Shooop-i-dooop…dooop-i-dooop-i-dooop-dooop

  11. I don’t any good Manager would want to come to Chelsea, the way Scolari was treated? who would want to put themselves in this position!

    And ChelseaD

how much of our season has been poor? do you honestly think someone else could do better?!

If i remember correctly Hull on their day beat Arsenal, and gave Man United a run for their money, how many other teams have scored 3 against the devils this season?

I agree that the game with Hull was a poor game, I don’t understand why he took Quaresma off and replaced him with Droga, why Kalou was kept. Why he basically did the same subsitions he did at liverpool even though at the end we lost.

at the same time how many other proven attacking players did we have on the bench?!

we have a team with no depth, we brought a world class manager gave him no resources and now we disgrace him.

This team will never be as great as it should when RA looks for simple quick fixes and treats the team like a stock and just wants quick results and looks at the league table likes its the Dow or S&P.

  12. oh and financial responsibility, we won’t pay money for new players but we keep dishing out on broken contracts with managers?

  13. This is absolutely Bonkers. Mr. Peter Kenyon (Leeds) announced that they are appointing someone temporary until the end of the season. Is he piss???
The last four managers were on temporary appointment. What is he talking about. Are we going to have the next four on a temporary basis. Can Alex and Arsene please tell us how they manage to stay so long in their club so that Mr. Kenyon can take heed.Scholari have to take some blame for using his Brazilian mafia coaching team and ease out Steve Clarke. The Statistic showed two weeks after he left us, we went on a free fall and West Ham went on the Climb. We have too many pensioners in the team who feels they are still the Miss World of Football, I really wished I never went there to see Hull torture us. I wished I stayed with my Asahi Beer at Chelsea Bar.
I think Abrammovich will bring Guss in from Russia as they don’t have much programmes until the summer and test him out whether he is suited for Premier league football.
I think he should start getting some proper advisor for him to see some sense and bring some stability to the Club. We cannot live on the knife edge.
