Wilkins Gets Formation Right In The End

I’ve had my fair share to say about our formation this season, mainly because I’ve had a job understanding why Scolari persisted with a formation that simply didn’t work – particularly at home.

So, to see Ray Wilkins finally have enough balls to go for a 4-4-2 when things weren’t working for us yesterday pleased me a great deal. Especially when you saw the amount of space it created.

We spent what felt like an eternity under Avram Grant with him insisting in playing Nicolas Anelka out of position, and the Frenchman looked about as comfortable as a goldfish on a beach. So why would any manager worth his salt put Anelka – and us – through that again? Anelka plays up front, end of story. He’s our top goal scorer this season and he hasn’t done that by playing on the right wing.

Ok, this might have been Watford away, so the amount of space a change to 4-4-2 seemed to give us may have been a little deceptive but let’s be honest, we’ve all seen how well Scolari’s tactics have worked for us at Stamford Bridge this season.

Hopefully Hiddink was taking note!

  1. I’m sure Hiddink is a 4-4-2 guy. This is because with Russia, and his former clubs, PSV and Real Madrid he stuck to that very popular formation.

  2. Apparently Grant and Scolari hadn’t heard of the ‘horses for courses’ adage. Under Scolari we were utterly predictable – always a 4-3-3. I hope Hiddink is more flexible in his approach.

  3. Yeh Abhishek, I think youre right. 4-4-2 isnt the miracle answer to all our problems on the field but its about having the tactical nous to know when to change things. I hope Hiddink shows us a bit more versatility than Scolari did.
