Why Would Chelsea Sell Nicolas Anelka?

I was on one of the Chelsea forums yesterday and yet again I read a comment about selling Nicolas Anelka and this whole ’sell our top goalscorer’ thing confuses me so much, I feel obliged to have a bit of a rant.

I mean, if any of you feel like explaining it to me, then please feel free but I honestly don’t get it. He’s bagged 20 goals for us already, so potentially could have around 30 by the end of the campaign, and yet there’s still a load of Chelsea supporters suggesting we should get rid of him. WHY FFS??

Chelsea have got themselves a pretty decent goal average this season, thanks largely to the Frenchman, because let’s be honest, what sort of goal difference would we have had without him? Didier Fucking Drogba certainly hasn’t contributed much to our goal difference this season, so without Anelka we’d be up shit creek without a paddle to put it mildly.

And whilst I’ve been guilty myself of questioning Anelka in both the ’big games’ and at Stamford Bridge this season, even I can’t argue that without him, Chelsea would be a lot worse off than they are now – we could’ve gone out of the FA Cup against Watford for a start.

No, for me, unless Hiddink works some kind of miracle on Didier Drogba for the remainder of this season, there’s only one striker we should be selling in the summer and it isn’t Nicolas Anelka.

  1. well actually,i’d be among those demanding for the exit of anelka in chelsea.
for sure his our top scorer but h’ve not lived up to expectation against big teams like man utd, liverpool, arsenal and even minors like everton and aston-villa
    we

  2. Who are these people who want Anelka to live. Are they stupid. He has scored 20 goals this for us this season. I agree, that we would be worse off right now if it wasn’t for Anelka. Those who want Anelka to live, should think again. Do you think that if Drogba was fit all season, he would have scored as many goals as Anelka right now? No, he wouldn’t have. I’m not saying that Drogba is not a good enough striker. What I mean is, Drogba has passed his best. I believe his best was in the 2006/07 season, were he scored 33 goals. Believe me, he will never reach this tally again in his career. Drogba is still one of the best, and most feared strikers in the world. But, however, i think Anelka is right now better than Drogba. I’m not saying that we should sell Drogba or put him on the bench regularly, but actually i’m hoping that Hiddink, unlike Scolari, will play Drogba and Anelka together.

  3. Samuel – I wouldnt call Aston Villa or Everton minors, Villa are above us in the Premier League for a start. Oh and Anelka scored our 2nd when we beat them btw.

Granted, Anelka hasn’t looked the same player against United, Liverpool or Arsenal but is he the only one of our players who didnt perform in them games, or just the scapegoat? Would people be asking for Drogba’s sale if he failed to score against the three of them?

The fact is, a goalscorer’s job is to put the ball in the back of the net – against whoever. He’s done it 20 times already this season and by my reckoning that suggests he’s doing what he’s paid to do which is more than we can say for Drogba given the return we’ve had from him this season.

  4. this is what i’ve been thinking about. he has a greay form now, he scored 3 goals in 15 minutes! i don’t think drogba can do this. i mean he wasn’t on his best form last month, but scoring a hat-rick made all anelka’s haters shut up!

  5. Anelka will have 20+ goals this season. He is getting up there in age. He will never be more valuable than he is now. Chelsea can only buy if they sell. Chelsea need to get younger. Sell high, sell high, sell high. Sell him to City. He doesn’t score the important goals. Him keeping us “in it” this season is only deluding people further that we’re a good side.

For the record, I say sell Drogba too. Too old. Past it. Unhappy. Get some youth in here.

  6. in order to win the league, champions league, or fa cup Chelsea MUST play both Drogba and Anelka together 90 minutes each game!
