Should Hiddink Keep An Eye On Chelsea’s ‘Attacking’?

Juventus defender Olof Mellberg wasn’t impressed by Chelsea on Tuesday night and has had a bit of a moan. And whilst I’d like to say he’s just bitter because he lost, unfortunately I have to admit he has a point, even if he does totally exaggerate it.

Mellberg says “They attacked the referee and the linesmen with five or six players. It looked really ugly.  They continuously tried to affect the referee with half a dozen players so we tried to break them up.”

I mean, he’s right it was ugly and sadly reminiscent of the old, undisciplined Chelsea. You know, the Chelsea that got themselves slated in the press all too often under Mourinho and later, under Avram Grant? The Chelsea we looked to have left behind this season. So, to see at least half a dozen of our players crowding the ref because they knew a penalty was about to be rewarded, didn’t impress me much either.

Having said that, I think the word ‘attack’ is a bit strong and it didn’t go on all night either. At least the Chelsea captain had the sense to push all his players back eventually.

What I don’t get though is what exactly it was they were complaining about. Belletti had blatantly handled the ball and there wasn’t much to argue about anyway, so for all their moaning and groaning, the spectacle served no purpose other than to draw the sort of criticism we’ve been trying to get away from.

And whilst I’m all for us fighting for everything, it doesn’t always have to be literal.

  1. Actually Drogba cleared it in the post match interview as of y they had crowded the ref.. It seems the ref blew the whistle on suggestion from his assistant and he actually dint know who had fouled in the box.. But as soon as the whistle went, some chelsea players ran to him to ask y and as the ref was not able to tell them who had handled it, our players started bullying him trying to get a unlikely decision ;) once the decision was sorted frm his assistant, Terry cleared it to the rest of our boyz !!!
