Lampard vs Alonso: Is The Hatchet Really Buried?

This week sees yet another Chelsea v Liverpool clash and another coming together of Frank Lampard and Xabi Alonso.

Alonso came off worst against Lampard back in 2005, when a challenge from the Chelsea midfielder left him with a broken ankle and you’d have to say they’ve never been the best of friends since. Before our game in February, Lampard made the mistake of commenting about the feud in the press, so naturally, when he came up against Alonso on this occasion, the Spaniard’s theatrical rolling around was enough to convince Mike Riley there was malice involved before he showed Lampard a red card.

However, as we all know, this was just Alonso being Alonso so the card was duly rescinded and when England played Spain ten days later Lampard suggests they finally buried the hatchet.

The Chelsea and England midfielder says “It’s a good battle between us. He is a fantastic player. We’ve had our moments in the past but there’s a lot of respect. I spoke to him after the Spain game when we (England) played out there, because of the red card I got before, and cleared the air a bit. There are a lot more important things than football and you shouldn’t have petty arguments off the pitch.”

So, as far as Lampard is concerned it should be a friendly affair on Wednesday as far as him and Alonso go.  I can’t see it somehow though.

  1. FACT: Macherano will shut Lampard up in CL.
Rafa will be instructing Macherano to not give Lampard any room to move & Macherano is goint to do just that.

  2. ‘Alonso being Alonso’ has never had a red card as a Liverpool player. Nor, if you watch him week in, week out will you see him rolling on the floor or play acting.

Your post just wreaks of bitterness. Lampard did infact make contact with Xabi in the anfield red card incident, although he did also take the ball so the only thing i agree with you is that it was a harsh red card.

Every Chelsea fan i have spoken to agrees that the incident didnt really change the game as Liverpool were dominant in every area.

If you want to talk about play acting in ties between the two sides then i refer you back to the semi in 2007 when Gudjohnsen dived for Alonso for pick up a yellow and miss the second leg. But we dont need to dwell on that as justice was served and despite a wrongly disallowed goal the reds progressed to the final in athens.

Im sorry but your post just smacks of a bitter fan trying to make something of nothing and i hope that like Frank Lampard the majority of supporters reading this share his view that Xabi is a quality player. I can understand your dislike of Gerrard, and he has been guilty of playacting and silly tackles, but Xabi? Lay off the crackpipe mate!

  3. I agree, I don’t believe it is being left in the past! We’ll see on Wednesday…

  4. craiglfc - 5 players red carded against Alonso this season and in 4 of those games it gave Liverpool an advantage they certainly didnt have against 11 men. No wonder you value him so much.

  5. Alonso got his by causing that OG at the Riverside against Middlesbrough..

  6. chelsead - i value him because he has been one of our players of the season. i would argue that given how injury prone he was last season the notion that he goes out looking to draw fouls is a ridiculous one. at the end of the day, teams that play Liverpool would recognise that he is one of the sides best passers of a ball, however he can be slow (his big weakness in my opinion) so they look to close him down.

at the end of the day Lampard has come out and said they made peace and yet it seems some of you guys are looking to make something out of nothing.

be honest, how many of you knew about this feud before our game in feb? i didnt. and how many times have Alonso and Lampard faced each other since the broken ankle incident? ive lost count! and in those encounters its hardly been a patch on the kind of sparring we saw in the days of Keane and Vieira.

so come on guys, grow up and get over this nonsense.
