New Signings Not Good For Joe Cole?
So, Yuri Zhirkov, Daniel Sturridge and Ross Turnball are all set to become Chelsea players but are these the sort of players we had in mind when we thought about summer signings?
Ross Turnball declined to renew his contract with relegated (snigger) Middlesbrough and looks all set to provide some competition in the Chelsea goal for Petr Cech. Good signing or not? Well, for me, he’s English, he’s 24, he’ll come on a free transfer, and with Hilario currently our only back-up in goal – it certainly can’t do us any harm.
At 25 and able to play anywhere down the left side, Zhirkov could be a good signing. Having been linked with both Scolari and Hiddink – who referred to him as a ‘top class footballer’, it looks as if it’s Ancelotti who’s finally nailed him down in a four-year deal worth somewhere between £17 - £18million. Seems strange that we’d bring him in right after Malouda has signed a new contract although with him versatile enough to provide cover at left-back as well, there seems to be method in Chelsea’s madness – but where exactly does that leave the injured Joe Cole? Playing off the front man maybe?
Then again, if that attacking role was being considered for Cole, would we be signing City’s Daniel Sturridge? Again, English, just 19 and after the tribunal agrees the fee he’ll cost us somewhere between £5-£8million, so not a bad deal if he lives up to his potential. But of the three signings, I have to admit this is the one that raises the questions for me. Firstly, we already have a young striker in Franco di Santo, who up til now has barely had the opportunity to even show us his potential, nevermind realise it, so why would a 19 year old ex-City player be given any more of a chance? And secondly, if the plan is to bring Sturridge into the first team, where exactly is the place for Joe Cole to fight for?
Joe Cole can’t step up to big games, he is a latter day John Barnes and should be sold to Spuds for mega money.

but sturrage is he the cover when one other either drogba, anelka get injured that will not go down well with chelsea fans, Need a top striker and a few other here and there,

When we talk about sturridge and di santo we have to keep in mind they 19 and 20 respectively. With Drogba and Anelka both in their 30+ will have a season or two at the most. May be both of them or just one of them. If you think in terms of future, its good plan. So for future it would work out brilliantly. So there is no need for Joe Cole to worry as he would get plenty of time on pitch to prove himself and I am sure he will. The only question mark here would be Kalou and no one else.
Last season we kept saying that the problem was lack of depth in our team, now that the owner and manager are fixing that, i think we really shouldn’t complain. Look at man United, they buy someone for 30 mil and bench him sometimes. 18 for Zhurkov is really good business and as much as Guss hated rotation when we are going to compete in so many tournaments and the possibility of injuries we are going to need to rotate. add to that the fact that we are going to miss players to the African cup and through bans. We need MORE DEPTH THAN most teams.
As it stands right now some other teams (( BARCA , MAN U and possibliy REAL depending on what the team looks like at the end )) have better starting 11s than us. But cover will be the best in the world. Zhurkov as Cover for A. Cole and Malouda. Ivanovic as Cover for anyone in Defence really, Mancienne, Mikel and …

the only reason for these signings is because of this new fifa rule. which means we need more english players. thats why we are buying turnbull and sturridge and zhurkov is cover down the left flank. plus sturridge has alot of potential and ill be a quality stricker in a couple of years. but we do need some big signings. I say we buy ashley young (£25m) and benzema (£35m - £40m).
What this about a plan to buy players? The owners plan or the managers plan.

it’s fine for Joe because he plays on the right wing, think about it essien and lampard in the middle with joe on the right wing and zhirkov on the left but then next match malouda on the left, and then up front aguero playing off drogba.
The signing of Zhirkov is positive for the ’strength in depth’ aspect of Chelsea’s squad, but what we really need is a quality striker as many fans are saying - not an unproven player from City. That isn’t to say he isn’t a good, young, English talent - but he wont give us that match winner, game changing player that Chelsea need so badly. In a nut shell, Pato or Ribery would fill that gap (which really would jeopardise Joe Cole’s position in the starting 11, despite him being one of mine, and other Chelsea supporters, favourite player). The only problem is because of Real Madrid’s exploits, the players that would have cost 40 million have had their stock rise significantly and will now cost 60+ Million. With Abramovich not wanting to spend crazy sums of money, I cant see either of those transfers materialising.

Sham is English your first language? I sure hope not. Deco made a comment about a rich man’s toy. I think we can chalk that comment to bitterness by a player who couldn’t hold a first team spot. We can take his opinion with a grain of salt. It’s not like we’re the only club not signing a big name player. United haven’t been able to sign anyone either. Seems like everyone wants to go to Real Madrid.
Also maybe Chelsea are going to try throwing 14-15 guys on the pitch and see if anyone notices. That would solve the problem of who’s going to get playing time.
Verdict on new signings:
Ross Turnbull: I hope he doesn’t plan on being our #1 any time soon. He couldn’t hold down a starting position at ‘Boro, so I can’t imagine him being able to compete with Cech in the near future. It will be nice to have another Englishman on the roster, and he has a tremendous upside in being just 23 years of age. He will definitely learn a tremendous amount from being an understudy to our Czech keeper. I’m afraid that he won’t stick it out long at the Bridge however, as I’ve read quotes that “Turnbull is leaving for regular first team action”. If that was the case, then he’d be better off at a Championship side.
Daniel Sturridge: If you compare him to all of our other current young players, this guy has a tremendous upside. He is strong on the ball, physical, and just the type of player that Chelsea likes to have upfront. I think that this is a great signing for us as we don’t want to have too many players competing for forward positions. Anelka or Drogba will start each game…so unless one of them is sold…there would be too much high priced talent on the bench. Getting these young and promising players like Sturridge who are perhaps a year away from a regular position is smart. Young English players is even smarter, with the impending “home rule” requirements. I say that this guy will be in the starting XI next year, as long as he can be patient through a year of limited work.
Yuri Zhirkov: It is hard not to wonder about what this guy will bring to the table. Hiddink knew him well and recommended him highly to the Chelsea brass. Apparently capable of playing “anywhere” on the left, Zhirkov is an apparent utility man that Chelsea need on the left side.
What makes me worried is that although he can “play anywhere on the left”, is he any good at any of those positions…or should I ask if he is better than who we have at any of those positions? More efficient than Ashley going forward or defending for instance? If not, we are about to waste a lot of money on a player who is just “good on the left” but not “a great winger or defender, just good enough”. I always get worried about players who are not defined in one position.
Maybe I am just being pessimistic in regards to this guy, but there has been plenty of wasted money spent in the past few years.
Chelsea Summer Transfer Verdict: “It’s all quiet on the West London Front”
We are linked to every big name in the market, but haven’t yet made a splash. These signings fail to bring the awe that Real Madrid have been creating, but I don’t think we need that right now. I am fine with securing our future by singing English talent. Our squad, as it is currently, has gotten us deep in the CL Tournament, made us a contender for many years, and seems to still have a fighting spirit (read Ballack’s latest comments).
I would like us to keep an eye out on the talent that will inevitably be leaving Real Madrid this summer after they purchase all of these players. Sneijder, Van Der Vaart, Huntelaar, heck even Arjen Robben, all of these guys may be a creative spark that could add some dynamic to our team at a cheap price tag.
I really hope Joe Cole will stay in Chelsea. But we really need excellent attacking players like Pato and Aguero, i really hope we sign one or both of them.

Despite all the new signings I believe the chelsea team needs Karim Benzema, Aguero or Pato. Deco should be sold. It a gud idea that we maintaing most of our players which enhances consistency.
