Who’d Step Into Terry’s Boots?

With it starting to look a distinct possibility that John Terry could actually leave Chelsea this summer it’s only natural that thoughts start to turn to who should replace him in terms of the captaincy.

Frank Lampard seems to be the obvious choice to make the step up and he certainly was the one player last season who stood out above the rest in terms of leading by example.

What about Michael Essien though? When fit, he’s definitely our best player, has the drive and determination to turn a game but is he a leader?

Michael Ballack? A pretty strong character and not one you’d see in tears before a penalty shootout has even finished, although probably won’t play enough games to warrant the job.

Joe Cole? Totally committed to the cause irrespective of how many times he’s had to prove himself but again, when a player is subbed as often as Joey, it’d be pretty hard to captain the side.

John Obi Mikel? Still too temperamental and not leadership material.

Didier Drogba? Ha ha, never!

I guess for me then it’d have to be Frank Lampard. Who else is there?

  1. I agree that Essien could be a contender for the captaincy. The second half of the season he was by far and away Chelsea’s best performer on a regular basis and has the right attitude and commitment to the cause which I dont believe can be said about a number of other players who could be considered! (i.e Drogba) I would also say Lampard but if i’m honest he is the wrong side of 30 and we may need to be looking longer term that someone who will only be at their peak for a maximum of another 2 seasons. I always thought Mikel could be a contender but as you say a little too young at the moment.

    Anyway, John Terry will stay!

  2. ofcourse it would be lampard. he is the squad’s vice-captain and took command when terry was absent several times last season. though he may not be our “best player” (according to chelsea d) he is a player who puts in 100% commitment and passion everygame.
the real question should be what would our defensive line look like if Terry goes. A. Cole will be on the left, Alex will replace carvalho, Bonsingwa will be on the right if he doesnt go. so who will be our 4th defender? ivanovic certainly stepped up the champions league last year, but seemed to fizzle out by the end of the season. mancienne is still a bit young but could probably handle lower ranked teams. what does everyone else think?

  3. yeah deffinately lampard to be the new captain if terry leaves. but i will eat my hat if he does. he is mr chelsea and i think he is just doing this for a better contract not to sure why seeing as he’s on something like £130,000 a week. but if he does leave then lampard will be the new captain and i would like to see miach richards bought in and become the new terry he’s got everything terry has plus he has alot of pace and after a couple of years at chelsea he will be chucking himself in front of evry ball like terry. if we dont get richards then ivanovic is the second best replacement.

  4. I think Ivanovic is pure class. Much better than Alex. I honestly don’t think we would miss JT as a footballer. He’s had far too many big injuries and has been far from his best for at least 2 years now.

What we would certainly miss is JT as a character. He brings everyone together and for me has made Chelsea the tight knit group it is today.

I would be gutted to see him go but if Citeh want to pay us £40 for him then more fool them.

  5. Why not Petr Cech as the captain…plays nearly every single game, when fit is a top 5 goalie in the world, and according to Scolari, is very influential….

  6. How about Le Sulk? haha.

Jokes apart, yes, Lampard should take over captaincy.

  7. alex – are you having a laugh? ‘Mr Chelsea’?? Would any player worth that title sit back tight-lipped and say nothing the way Terry has? Surely if he actually gave a shit about us he’d have said so by now?

  8. There is only two you could consider for this role and that would be Lampard or Ballack. BUT, Ballack hasn’t got the respect of the fans so he is out of the question so it has to be Lampard.

But, I don’t believe all this about JT. If he really wanted to go for the money then he would of handed in a transfer request alot earlier in the summer.

  9. Chelseadaft – why would he hand in a request and risk looking like a complete arsehole? Surely its better to wait for silly money to be offered and hope the club cant refuse it? How about ‘if he really didn’t want to go for the money he’d have come out and said so by now’?

  10. Hi Chelsea D, I am only saying that it will never come to that as JT is Chelsea through and through. He ain’t going anywhere, just remember this time last year, the press had a field day about Lampard and they are doing exactly the same with JT.

I believe there will be a statement made before they go away and all this nonsense will be put to bed

  11. Chelseadaft – Lampard proved there’s no smoke without fire by admitting there WAS truth in him thinking about leaving last summer. Personally, I couldnt care less what JT’s got to say anymore, its too late to redeem himself now.
