Chelsea Doing A Patch-up Job?

The new season is approaching and despite talk of a ‘marquee signing’ for Chelsea, there doesn’t seem to be much sign of one yet. Unless Sturridge, Turnball or Zhirkov are classed as ‘marquee signings’ of course – nah, surely not?

Mind you, none of the constant links in the press seem to be happening do they?

Despite some pretty outrageous stories earlier this summer, Kaka eventually decided Real Madrid was his preferred destination and whilst his former team mate might have talked up a move in our direction, it would seem Pato now seems set to stay at Milan.

Another player, once linked to us for a ridiculous sum of money and now likely to stay where is, is Franck Ribery, with even Manchester United looking a lot less likely to sign him than they previously did. Not than Manchester isn’t still the desired destination for quality players of course, albeit for slightly less ambitious reasons these days as Tevez demonstrated by signing for the city’s second club – again instead of us!

Adebayor apparently toyed with the idea of a move to Chelsea before following Tevez to Eastlands and with even Glen Johnson preferring the dippers – we’re not exactly fighting players off are we?

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I actually want players like Johnson at Chelsea – or even someone like Ibrahimovich (who, as we know has swapped clubs with Eto’o) – it’s more that I’m wondering who exactly Chelsea have in mind now.

I mean, whoever it is will have to be pretty bloody special given the size of the task in front of them. Or is the ageing squad who really were a bit off the pace last season expected to undergo some miraculous rejuvenation over the coming weeks? I can’t work it out myself because whilst younger players like Miroslav Stoch are sent to play for clubs like FC Twente, we’re giving new deals to players like Michael Ballack and presumably hoping we can squeeze the odd performance out of him now and then.

Fair enough, we could still see the odd departure to bring the average age down a bit – particularly with Deco and Carvalho’s bags already in the hall (so to speak) – but then we hear Shevchenko could be making a return, so it’s hardly awe inspiring so far this summer.  And then the irony of all ironies is that the one bloody year I really want to hear Drogba saying he’s off – it all goes quiet on the Ivorian front!

Botox and hip replacements all round then?

  1. I still maintain that we will get our ‘marquee’ signing yet and that will be Pato! Milan are lining up a few players themselves eg Hernanes (Sao Paulo), Fabiano (Saville) and Adriano (free agent). It is also no coincidence (in my opinion) that Deco was played in the DM position against Seattle last night. Anecelotti loves a ball playing ‘artist’ in front of his back 4 to bring the ball forward and use it intelligently. Deco plus cash for Pirlo and a large wedge of Romans money for Pato to complete Ancelotti’s wishes for the season ahead.

  2. Don´t forget that we made some signings of younger players this year.
Zhirkov, Turnbull and Sturridge are still very young and defniatly a step forward compared to our last transfer activities.

  3. When the only reason you lose the CL semifinals is that you get jobbed, against potentially the worlds best team, you don’t really need to tweak things that much. Where would you like to put Tevez? Johnson? Ibra? First, you don’t need more divas. Second, you want someone who won’t have a problem playing off and on – thats the problem with a class team like Chelsea and those players. Third, we need to focus on youth, and we have been. Last, we have been doing good business, and I respect that more than the buy everyone approach we took a bit ago and Manc City is doing now.

  4. Our youth team is doing good especially yesterday albeit against the Sounders they showed signs of potential. Sturridge of course got the goal, Di Santo showed he had some speed and probably would of gotten a goal if his strike partners wasn’t Pizarro or Schevchenko, and Sinclar who I had always been a fan of looked great despite losing the ball once.

  5. We were playing Pizarro??? And I thought it couldn’t get any worse, lol.

  6. what do you have against drog? He does the business,a big game player, always. People say he plays when he wants to but under scolari he never played much and when he did,it was in sub appearances and was obviously rusty coming from missing a necessary preseason, gettin an op & 2 injuries.we made good signings.we just need a gourcuff/iniesta.no marquee signings. sinclair/kakuta/zhirkov can provide our width. sturridge & disanto will provide cover for nic/drog.defence, there is no question. .

  7. Totally agree with blueblood

  8. dont agree we were off the pace last seson.due to scolari’s inabilities we were pretty impressive in winning our matches under hiddink.if you transport those stats into a whole season we would have gone extremely close in winning the league and more likely winning it!!
