Has Victory Really Left Ancelotti Over-Confident?

You have to laugh at the way journalists can take an inconspicuous comment and stretch it into a headline eh?

After yesterday’s classy performance ended in a deserved 3-0 win over Burnley, an understandably upbeat Ancelotti stated “We have showed that we can adapt to different systems and shapes with intelligent movement and I am pleased with the way my attacking players have shown they can move into spaces whatever system we play.  I am happy because we showed good play on the pitch. We have to maintain this moment.  My players did well in the first half but it was important to maintain quick movement of the ball for the full 90 minutes.  Every week we work in training to play well and for a coach that is important.  It means that we are going the right way. I proposed an idea and the players are doing very well with it.”

Not much controversy in there for the press boys to wet themselves over, I mean, we can all agree whatever he’s asking them to do seems to be paying off at the minute. We’re looking as efficient and composed as we did under Hiddink but more than that, Ancelotti’s introduced an attacking element and the fast, fluid play we so often seem to miss.

Here’s the headline clincher though because the Chelsea boss goes on “We have a possibility to win the league. We have started well but we know the season is very long.  I have trust in this squad and all of my players are hungry to show what they can do and to win every game.”

Again, he doesn’t appear to have given us any groundbreaking news there either – obviously we have a possibility of winning the league, as do the other 19 clubs – technically. Rocket science it’s not – unless of course you read the subliminal message in there as only The Sun can – oh, and swap the odd word of course. Yep, true to journo form, as long as you don’t quote what Ancelotti actually said, what you end up with is a headline screaming that even at this early stage of the season Ancelotti’s  claiming we can win it and every opposition supporter jumping all over us for our apparent over-confidence.

Personally, the way I read it though is that as understatedly as Hiddink before him, Ancelotti is just happy to be getting the best out of the lads and has a realistic amount of faith in them without actually shooting off at the mouth about what we will or won’t achieve this season – and that’s exactly as it should be.

Still, keeps the journo’s in a job I suppose.
