Terry’s New Deal Raising Old Questions?

It’s funny but I could’ve sworn I’d heard John Terry had ‘sleepless nights’ in the days following Manchester City’s repeated offers over the summer.  I’m a bit confused as to what he was doing when he wasn’t sleeping now though because in his latest statement of commitment, the Chelsea captain has expressed his ‘disappointment’ at the very idea that Manchester City even crossed his mind during any of those waking hours.

When asked if he ever gave leaving Chelsea a second thought, as already made clear last month, Terry says “No I didn’t — it was never an issue for myself.   I’ve come out and I’ve spoken about it many times. I’ve been here since I was 14 years old and for a club to come in and make an offer for me — I was very honoured by that.  It’s the first time in my career that someone has come in and made an official offer for me.”

So he was flattered then – and spent 23 days possibly enjoying that feeling whilst supporters were left to wonder what was going on? Although when it comes to the supporters, Terry insists “I’ve spoken to some of them — it’s been a bit disappointing, because in the back of their minds, people thought I was possibly leaving.   But to spend so long at Chelsea football club and for people to not know me as well as they really should do, can sometimes be a little disappointing.  I love the fans, I’ve got a great relationship with them and as I say, missing out on the Champions League — these are the things I want to win for Chelsea football club.”

Hang on a minute though John, to be fair, you had 23 days in which to ‘talk to some of them’ – 23 days during which you said absolutely nothing to stem the daily speculation, 23 days during which the fans you ‘love’ were waiting for just two words to stop all the nonsense in the press, to stop all the flack they were copping from the opposition on your behalf, all the arguments about you being ready to sell the club down the river for the money – and all you needed to say in those 23 days to put the speculation to bed was ‘I’m staying.’

A couple of words don’t seem a lot to ask really considering the sort of pedestal you’ve been put on by those fans and yet you’re ‘disappointed’ your decision not to put yourself out to say anything led to some supporters thinking there was a possibility you might actually leave?

So come on John what exactly are we supposed to believe? I mean, weren’t we also told your hanging out on a statement for 23 days had nothing to do with you wanting an improved contract? and yet here we are today being told you’re about to sign a five year deal worth close to £39million despite you still having three years left to run on your current deal.

Ok so this could all be pure speculation again, but bearing in mind we’re Chelsea supporters and not mind-readers, exactly how well do you expect us to know what’s going on in your head?

  1. terry is a very good player for me so Chelsea keep hold of him for good also i must say that i was disappointed with referee mike dean for his attitude in yesterday poor officiating match between arsenal vs man utd match pl English f A should pl intervene pl

  2. Points well raised Chelsea D. Has Terry been asked by any media hack exactly why it took him 23 days to talk? Certainly doesn’t paint him in good light. Saying (if he really did) that he is “… a bit disappointed” with us fans for thinking he might leave is a bit rich coming from a guy who keeps us fans on tenterhooks for 23 days.

  3. I do not care what is going on in his head as long as he comes to the field and commits to play. Terry has demonstrated exactly that.
As most people I have had career opportunities and although I love the company I work for I had to consider what was in front of me.
I am not a press guru but there are a couple of things we should all consider. Most likely the press will try to use terry’s words in a context that suits them, because if there is no story there are no sales.
Second if he was all about the money he would be in Manchester City right now and as a fan I think that would be worse then how the press says he commits to the team. We would be stuck with a less player in the position and as we can see this year keeping our players is important as no clubs seem to want to sell to us and players do not want to come.
John Terry UEFA defender of the year wears our colors, and wears them well

  4. John Terry sacked his life long agent and best friend after all his non-sense about his potential exit from Stamford Bridge, why did he do this? Because they refused to let Terry give chelsea any assurances in order to get him big money and thus get their company big money.

You call yoursef Chelsea fans yet you’re doubting our own Mr. chelsea? I hope you are ashamed of this article, and that includes anyone jumping onto the bandwagon and replying in support of this badly written and badly informed article.

  5. i think we can call it a day and give JT a break.
He stayed, of course he thought about the offer from Citeh, with all the money involved, but what do you expect ? he is just a human being and not a superhero standing over anything, even tho every supporter wants him to be like this.
what he means to the club he shows on the pitch, and if anyone forgot: he stayed and turned down the sad City.
So, lets get on with it… JC to sign a contract !

  6. Dude stoprsising these stupid issues. It’s done and dusted.

  7. I would like to see Terry out of the Premier League, maybe here in Spain. That way he could prove that he really is one of the best defenders in the world.

  8. ChelseaBlueForLife - no, I’m not ashamed of the article, if that was the case I wouldn’t have posted it would I? The fact is, if he was really ‘Mr Chelsea’, he wouldn’t have needed more than a day or two to rubbish the stories - for some reason it took him 23 days and ’sleepless nights’. Why would it interfere with his sleep do you reckon?

cfc - I don’t have a problem with him giving the offer some consideration - plenty of players would. What I have issues with is this whole ‘leaving was never a possibility’ rubbish. Of course it was a possibility, so rather than playing up to the whole ‘Mr Chelsea’ facade, just be honest about it - that’d earn him a lot more respect.

  9. that’d earn him a lot more respect from you maybe but the majority of fans would much rather forget about the 23 days and keep Mr Chelsea as Mr. Chelsea. Overall it is a smart move to question the fans….. Some may see through it but most will believe it mostly because they want to.

  10. i think its pretty obvious he was on his way out and was offered a new contract he’s motivated by money not by his love for the club “mr chelsea” is a fucking joke after what went down this summer

  11. I’m not a chelsea supporter but I will give my opinion anyway…
I agree with the author…why do you need 23 days or whatever it was to say that it was never an issue…
don’t give me the agent excuse…coz you don’t need an agent to release a press statement…you can go right to your club tell them look I want to stay and want to issue a statement that I want to stay.
Yes I understand he is human like everyone else but why say it was never an issue when it took him 23 days to say that?
he could have just said yes I was tempted but in the end I decided that staying at chelsea was the best choice/option/etc for me.

and him being dissapointed that the supporters thought that he was leaving.
well what do you expect? 23 days without saying anything…they will obviously start thinking that he is gonna leave. so he has no right to be dissapointed in them when it is him who didn’t say anything when all that transfer stuff was going around.

  12. You should’ve let him go, he’s way past his best, the greedy twat.
