Should John Terry Be Getting The Hump?

Before the game against Apoel Nicosia, John Terry had said in his programme notes “Going up to Manchester City and losing, our second defeat of the week, not only hurt, it’s not what this Chelsea’s about. It’s got to be a real wake-up call. We’re still top by two points and this emphasises that the Premier League’s not a walk, it’s a big, big battle. I’ve been going on about getting a winning run together and that’s what we did before our last two games. We’ve got three home games in the next eight days (including Apoel) to start another one. And it’s got to be just the start. The first target is to win all three games. Nothing less will do.” Little wonder he stormed off after the game then!
But is he right to do that? I mean, he makes no secret of the fact he’s a bad loser and that’s not necessarily a bad thing, I know I’d rather see players completely pissed off at losing than see some nonchalant shrug of the shoulders, but as TheChelseaBlog pointed out after the Wigan game, it doesn’t exactly demonstrate the ‘togetherness’ we’re supposed to be all about.
TheChelseaBlog also suggested in the wake of the Citeh game that our players need to drop the ‘victim’ attitude if they’re to get what they deserve and I guess that’s the point here. We were overconfident before the Wigan game, before the Citeh game and we were most certainly overconfident against Apoel and John Terry isn’t going to address that by sulking.
As disappointed as he was, the fact is, he was part of the defence that conceded not just one (yes, I mean you Obi Mikel), but two sloppy goals midweek and as such, he’s no less blameless than the rest of his players. So rather than walking out on his side with the right raving hump, maybe he should have been there reminding his players exactly what this Chelsea is all about?

On e must vremember vthat thisw is a Captasin who CAPITULATED in a Champions League Final. His miss from the penalty spot was something that could happen to anyone, but his reaction waqs NOT that of a Captain. The game was still level after his miss. He should have gone vback to his players and exhorted them to make up for his miss and go on to win thec trophy.
Instead, he fell to thev ground, a beaten man, telling the vworld, and his team mates, that the game was lost. He gave up and cried at his own misfortune, rather than spurring on his team. RFonaldo missed a penalty too, but he and his captain didn’t crumple to the ground and show weakness and surrender.
John Terry is forever tainted as a Captain by this weakling exhibition of non-leadership.
Apologies for keyboard problems above.
Sir Cecil…..im sorry but that was alot of drivel you wrote there. Of course you didnt see them/ Ronaldo cry cuz they won the final. Terry is no weakling and him crying only shows his love for the club and battles through to the final.
The time for crying was at the END of the game, not in the middle of a shootout WITH THE SCORES LEVEL.
He was CAPTAIN. His job was to think about the next penalty taker’s morale, not his own disappointment. The other players saw a crestfallen, DEFEATED Captain laying on the grass. His job was to get up and demand the next players should atone for his miss. The game was level!!!!
Sorry, but this was anti-Captaincy. It was everything a Captain should NOT do in a difficult situation.
I have never agreed with Sir Cecil but here he is absolutely right. It wasn’t his miss that cost us, it was Anelka’s funny how we never mention that! that’s because the image of him crying is what everyone remembers. And during our current games, He needs to be a leader both in terms of his playing and sportsmanship seeing him jump and down after we concede like that and shouting is not going to get our players together. Specially since he IS CHELSEA! all other players are considered somehow less than him, and i believe his attitude winds up alienating other players, as if HE CARES MORE! and u just can’t have that attitude in a team. Maybe you can argue not all of our players care about Chelsea as much as him but no one gets to where these players are without the will to win! these guys hate losing more than anyone! same as Terry!
I like JT a lot, but I think the last 6-8 month he has become too big for his own good. My worries started during the so called JT saga about going to citeh or not. The long haul of his contract renewal. And the latest e-mail rumours about cashing in on his national and international captaincy.
I have to ask the question; is JT playing for himself and his post-career reputation or is he playing for Chelsea?
Hopefully it’s the latter, but he needs to show a different attitude in the remainder of the season.
No player will ever be bigger than our beloved Chelsea.
