The John Terry Affair: This Isn’t About Football, Right?

Up til now, whilst TheChelseaBlog has dipped its toe into the John Terry saga, looking at the impact on his England captaincy and the embarrassing show of support for the real victim from ‘Team Bridge’, it’s pretty much shied away from looking at the man himself and the impact his actions have had on Chelsea FC. Of course I’ve talked about it on various football forums, but that’s fairly safe really because whilst not all of us share the same views, it’ll at least be a Chelsea community where you all share a common goal.

Opening an opinion up for general consumption is a whole different ball game though.  Quite apart from having the opposition seize on any apparent show of ‘disloyalty’ (and ultimately using it against us), personal opinion is irrelevant anyway surely? God knows I’ve been told enough times over the past few days that whatever John Terry does in his private life is exactly that – private. It’s got nothing to do with football and doesn’t in any way detract from his contribution to CFC, right?

Oh no wait……because  as a direct result of his sex life (or at least the publicity it’s created), John Terry could well be forced to take some time out from being our leader and legend, and spend some time being the sniveling, groveling, remorseful husband instead. Yes, with his wife Toni being forced to flee to Dubai (how awful for her by the way) to nurse her broken heart, Terry is apparently being given compassionate leave to try and patch up his marriage.

Carlo Ancelotti appeared to confirm that last night, stating “If he needs a holiday I will give him a holiday. If he doesn’t need a holiday then he will play against Cardiff.” So, given that missing a game for us – and an FA Cup game at that – means John Terry’s inability to keep his dick in his trousers is now having a direct impact on his availability for his club, I think its fair to say he has royally f***ed up this time. (Oh and just for the record, I think his private life stopped being private and started being about football when he chose a team-mates bird for his extra-marital exploits anyway).

So whilst his team-mates (hopefully) work their arses off, working towards retaining the FA Cup, their captain and leader won’t be around – as a direct consequence of his sordid affair – and I’m assured this is nothing to do with football. Please! We hear booing resounding around every pitch we play on the minute our captain so much as breathes near the ball, we have opposition players turning up in game-show style t-shirts and for an FA Cup game at least, our captain is given leave to spend Valentine’s Day with the wife and kids he’s so woefully disrespected. Seriously John, get a f***ing grip.

Personally I think seeing as Toni seems to have coped pretty well with his misdemeanours in the past, he’d be better served saving his explanations and apologies for Wayne Bridge but as it keeps being pointed out to me – this is none of my business because it really isn’t about football!

  1. Im a Liverpool fan and I could take this opportunity to stick the boot in but I wont because….I dont care! I will sometimes give an opinion about John Terry, the footballer, as it is what we all do; we give opinions about football. I care about football and Im interested in what happens on the football field. However, away from football, John Terry is just an ignorant chav from London who I couldnt give 2 f***s about, parking in disabled bays, throwing pi55 around night clubs. Lets remove him from the England captaincy and give it to….Steven Gerrard! Yeah, even as a Liverpool fan, I will say that Gerrard isnt any different from Terry. Same rumours, as yet unproven albeit, about his marriage, fighting in bars etc. Hes just some scally from Huyton whose private life I also have no interest in. Who cares what footballers do once they cross back over the white line? Theyre, young, rich and desirable to women and I think half of these spectacle-wearing journos are just jelous that their Mavis at home isnt quite the same as having 15 French underwear models on the go. John Terry is a leader, a fantastic player and captain and if England are to have any chance of winning the World Cup then these journos, who will be the 1st to condem if we dont win it, need to shut up and let Terry carry on with his football.

  2. Of course it’s about football and not just because he shagged his mate’s girlfriend. What about the rifts that this will cause in the England dressing room? As some of the players will be Terry’s mates and some will be Bridge’s mates and I think that you will find that Bridge’s mates that will end up despising Terry after this and although the decision of whether Terry should retain his captaincy or not has been left down to Capello, there are people higher up in the FA that think that Terry should be dropped altogther and quite right to, as even keeping him in the England squad is like giving credence to such disgusting behavior. Anyway, this could all cause a massive rift between Capello and the FA, so God only knows how this is going to effect us in the World Cup. And you think that he got stick last night of Hull fans, just wait till our lot come to Stamford Bridge (West Ham), boy is he going to get stick like he’s never endured before especially after what he said about our fans and our club last season. What an absolute scumbag!!!!! COYI.

  3. Steve.

Surely if you boo Terry you will have to take time off from booing Frank Lampard – or will you boo them both (with a few for Ashley Cole thrown in for good measure)? What a small minded bunch you all are. Theres nothing like supporting your team is there?

  4. Steve B – whilst I think John Terry could actually do himself a favour by resigning the England captaincy, I honestly can’t see why people would be calling for him to be dropped from the England set-up altogether. His behaviour is completely out of line (and yes I know he’s not the only man in the world to cheat on his missus but then he’s hardly Joe Average) – it doesn’t get much worse than cheating on his wife, kids and ‘mate’, but I fail to see how having some nasty little affair should see him everything but guillotined.
He deserves to lose his wife, he deserves to lose whatever friendship he had with Bridge (not that he appeared to respect it much anyway) and considering the lack of respect he has shown for a fellow team-mate, ultimately he deserves to lose the England captaincy as well. But do you seriously think its in England’s best interests to have him removed from the squad altogether? There might be a few of them that want to deck him but I honestly don’t believe the rest of the England team want to see his departure in full. Besides, given most of them are probably far from squeaky clean themselves, draconian measures aren’t going to make any of them feel very secure.

  5. Hi -am a Man Utd. man, and I think your captain is doing us a favour. Personally, I dont give a crap if he is shagging the whole country, but your own team mate’s bird? For Christ’s sake, no…that shocks my (questionable) footballing morales!! Iknow it sounds like double standards, but I am sure that a lot of football fanatics would agree…I used to play right back, and I cant even begin to imagine making out with with the center back’s wife/gf even if she was hotter than hell and came begging for it. One of the reasons why I would want my one year old son to play football if because I believe the sport builds toughness and strength of character, and is an excellent lesson in teamwork and solidarity. So much for all that….and that’s sad…

  6. whilst i don’t agree with what Terrry has done,(in fact outside of football there’s a lot that Terry has done that shows he’s just a complete twat)on the pitch he’s an inspiration for Chelsea and vital for England.A lot gets said about Mr England but the truth is that England have others that can lead just as well namely..Lampard,Gerrard and Rooney will not be found missing when resposibility on the pitch is required. But i think that people are completely missing the point..If Ashley Cole gets injured and is ruled out of the World Cup..who have we got to replace him?..The 1st choice stand in would be Wayne Bridge..get my point..now whatever decision is made about Terry affects England far more than it does Chelsea.I’m quite sure that Terry will shed more than a few tears over the next few weeks..but where have i seen that before…

  7. Nice article from the CFC point of view. I had been wondering what your fans thought about what his behaviour meant for Chelsea while the rest of the country is concerned about the national team.

Related article here about footballers being role models (and how people deny this to accept what Terry has done)

  8. England have won nothing in the last 1000 years, and will not win anything in the next 1000 years if they can’t seperate on-the-pitch and the off-the-pitch matters.

  9. I can’t believe what’s going on in England right now. Who do you think you are that you can convict him? You pretend to be angels who have never made mistakes. He’s just a human being that made a mistake. He didn’t commit a crime. But the most important thing is that it has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with football. He is still one of the best defenders in the world and a fantastic captain. I also can’t see a reason why Wayne Bridge should be affected by this affair because he and VP were splitted up when JT had the affair with her. I don’t understand why everyone is going crazy about that. He’s not the first and he won’t be the last. I think everyone should come down and leave John Terry alone. It’s his private life and he has to clear it up with nobody but his wife.

  10. Siddharth Kanjilal has got it spot on!! The English media isnt helping with all this crap, especially 5 months before the world cup!! Anyways I dont agree at all with what Terry has done and i feel sorry for his missus, but everyone seems to be saying this and that when we dont actually know nothing, also a lot of people dont really care what he does in his private life, coz i sure dont!! Come on how does cheating footballers get on the front page of the news, and footballers who drink and drive, get caught speeding and other worse things dont?? the media is a joke!!! But like i said i’m not condoning anything Terry has done!!

  11. A few comments to make you all think a little more. Hes messed up badly and should be punished my opinion is dismissal from international football not just the captaincy. These may sound harsh punishments but unless our footballers don’t stop with the loutish behaviour that comes with being an average john down the Nags head England will never win anything again. Our players are/have been Drunks, Druggies, Wife Beaters, Rapists, Cheaters and to top it off walk around in silly clothes parading their trophy wifes with them everywhere they go included work. I dont take my missus to work.
Another thing to consider by the comments made is that some people think his personal live has nothing to do with football, he endorses products by selling his name and good reputation ala Tiger Woods. also if he would have been pulled in by the police for kiddie fiddling, would those people still have the same response about his private life being seperate. I would hope not.
What he does for Chelsea, I dont care, personally I think hes one of the best defenders in Europe but i dont want him representing me for England. I wouldnt want to speak to him as a person because hes proved to be a complete …

  12. It’s a funny question, but what if it were Capello and not Terry in this situation? It would be worse right? He’s the manager, he shouldn’t do that to his players, they’d loose trust and respect for him. The captain is the bridge between the team and manager, he’s supposed to lead by example, he’s given the captaincy because he’s a leader on and off the pitch.
If this kind of thing happened between two team mates, then it would probably the captains job to help resolve it. Unfortunately the captains the one who’s been up to no good.
It’s all very well saying he shouldnt be captain of England. But then I don’t know if any player taking it off him would feel comfortable, how’s their wiki going to read ‘ became captain after John Terry messed around with another team mates girl’. Not the stuff of pride is it?

  13. I am in shock
Next time he will be found wandering around the training ground as a tour guide!!

At least he did not beat up a door man !!

But at the end of the day he can always go home and up his feet up!!

  14. THIS CELEBRAITIES SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO LIVE THEIR LIVES THE WAY THEY WANT AFTER ALL THEY SUFFER TO GET THE MONEY ALONE. ALL JOHN TERRY NEEDS IS TO MAKE PEACE WITH IS WIFE AND TRY TO BE FAITHFUL. WHAT HE WANT IS ONLY ALLOW IN AFRICA WHERE A MAN HAS THE SINGULAR RIGHT TO MARRY AS MANY HE CAN TAKE CARE OF WHAT A PITY JOHN.

  15. ROLE MODELS!!!
They are not! fotballers are lying ,cheats , they try to decieve ,the ref, linesmen, other players ,there captains , managers , chairmen,
they spit, fight , brawl , cotest every descission on and off the field , they drink, get drunk, do anything to win a game , involved in orgys, promote a bad way of running your life in general.
mmmmm going by that criteria i think john terry would make a fine captain of England.

  16. D, what a crock of unimpartial feminist crap!!!

Bridge’s ex has also slept with Mutu, Gudjohnson & at least another to be named, all while she was with Bridge.

I noticed you haven’t said one bad thing about them or poor, wounded Vanessa!!!!! Very select D.

Like it or not, JT is Chelsea’s most successful captain ever…

On Sky News this morning 5 female media hacks all put the boot into JT and said NOTHING about Vanessa Five Dicks!.!!

The feminist media in this country has done everything within their power to bring down JT, while conveniently overlooking the small matter of a manipulative whore who knew exactly what she was doing when she slept with anything in a blue shirt. Poor girl, real victim huh???. Double standards there.

As for Wayne Bridge, he gave it the big one, got with this Lingerie model ( which no-one mde him do) and came unstuck…bigtime!!!…If it was just JT who had slept with her, then i would of had more sympathy, but at least another 3 on top????….and he has a kid with her!!!…The Godfather should of also sacked Bridge for p*ss poor judgement!!!. I’ll agree with you there D, poor old Wayne is a real victim ( of brain removal, obviously!). He bought a dodgy trophy wife!!!.

Agreed, sleeping with your mates bird is out of order, but this wasn’t purley JT’s indescretion. Vanessa was the Chelsea Bike….She deserves the Queen’s award for industry at that rate!!!

    STILL TEAM TERRY!….KTBFFH!
