Cole’s Withdrawal Really Not A Problem?

I suppose the one thing all the press focus on John Terry’s sex-life has done, it’s leave Joe Cole alone for a while.

Prior to the recent revelations about the Chelsea skipper and his sacking as the England captain, we had one ‘story’ after another about the problems surrounding Cole’s contract negotiations and potential links elsewhere. However, with JT seemingly sorting out his marital differences and not much more for the rags to get their teeth into on that front, they’ve returned their attentions to the Chelsea midfielder.

We’d already heard about AC Milan’s apparent interest in Cole this week, although his agent David Geiss didn’t exactly confirm the stories, saying “AC Milan? All I can say is we are talking to Chelsea about a renewal. We’ll see what happens in the coming months. Currently there is no news of any kind.” But with another below par performance from Cole seeing him taken off at half-time yesterday, it’s only served to give the press what they regard as something else to go on.

Ray Wilkins obviously disagrees, insisting “Joe wasn’t injured, it was just a tactical thing.  We have a squad full of quality and therefore the manager will change things if he sees fit.  We are very fortunate as far as that is concerned. I am not concerned about his form.  When you have had a long lay-off like Joe, it really is a shock to the system. But it does take a bit of time to get back into your tip-top form.  That will come with Joe. He is working extremely hard day-by-day, so we don’t see any problems there at all.”

Not sure Joe would agree though – lacking fitness, struggling to find his form and he can’t even get 90 minutes against Cardiff in the cup – not ideal with the World Cup coming up this summer.

  1. Let us get serious for a minute, Joe Cole does not deserve a deal on his current form. Since he came back from injury he has performed below par. I think you guys should stop being english about the issue. He does not deserve a new contract and should be allowed to leave the club.

  2. Crap, Nnamdi, that crap of a response. Anybody can have a below par performance especially after such a long lay off. Lampard started the season with a string of below performances and the manager kept on playing him till he got his confidence back, that’s all Joe needs….Cole is about the best holding player we have in Chesea, the earlier is contract is sorted out the better for everyone.

  3. i feel a bit sorry for Joe – he comes back from a long lay -off and gets asked to play in a new position in the toughest league in the world – he does grt for a couple of games – then he hits some bad form – he’s in and out of the team – then he plays on the wing and plays pretty good in a couple of matches – but malouda is playing great especially at SB and he can’t get back in – he really han’t had a decent run in the side and to be fair doesn’t deserve it, but its hard to see how he can get back to form without one.

I would have played him at everton; a cold wednesday night up north – i think he would have done better than Malouda because he knows whats expected and needed. To me leaving hiim out showed that Carlo A still isn’t quite up with what this league demands ( he’s up with most of it but maybe 95%)
Anyway then Joe gets picked and has a shocker and everyone’s on his back.

I’d be interested if other chels fans think he”s lost what pace he had because of his injury

I love Joe but if he goes somewhere else in search of game time i wouldn’t blame him – he’s spent most of his chelsea proving himself to various managers and maybe he’s just sick of it.

Its a difficult situation for him and maybe he would be better off going though i’d be gutted.
