Oh dear, after all our excitement about Michael Essien’s possible return in time to add that something extra to our title fight, we can put the incontinence knickers away because it doesn’t look as if he’ll be making it back after all. In fact, he’s now said to be ‘unlikely’ to play for us again this season.

There we were hoping we’d finally see the Ghanaian pull on a Chelsea shirt for the first time this year against Stoke at the weekend, but it turns out we were a bit premature because Chelsea’s head of communications Steve Atkins confirmed yesterday “Contrary to this morning’s stories stating otherwise, Michael will definitely not be involved against Stoke on Sunday. He is unlikely to play again this season.”

Not what we wanted to hear really.
