Is Ashley Cole Off To La Liga?

Never really the shy, retiring type, Ashley Cole has got himself a bit of attention again since the World Cup.

We all know what’s happened obviously, despite being one of the few players to come out of the World Cup with any credibility whatsoever on the field, as ever, off the field he hasn’t done himself any favours.

Following England’s woeful performance against Germany and subsequent flight home, Football Supporters’ Federation chairman Malcolm Clarke offered this advice “In the light of the very poor performance of the England team at the World Cup and the large amounts of money which loyal fans spent following the team around South Africa, I think a period of silent reflection and humility would be good advice. A lot of fans are very committed to their country and the team and are quite rightly upset about what has happened. England needs to reflect on this. That includes the manager, the players and everyone else involved.”

Unfortunately, Ashley Cole didn’t appear to have grasped exactly what he’d meant by ‘humility’ and got off the plane pissing himself laughing. The inevitable pictures with headlines shaming Cole for having a sense of humour followed and suddenly the Chelsea left-back wasn’t laughing anymore. In fact, he was straight on his blackberry, posting “I hate England and the f***ing people!” on his twitter.

But, whilst this hasn’t gone down particularly well with anyone in England, it doesn’t seem to have put Real Madrid off because they’re still rumoured to be ready with a £25m bid for him. They’ve fancied him for a while and with former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho partly responsible for the dodgy deal that saw him come to Chelsea in the first place, you wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a reunion right now.

Madrid’s Sergio Ramos definitely isn’t ruling it out, stating “We are a club that is always looking to improve by adding the best players in the world. We have a proven record of signing English players – with David and Michael – and it would not surprise me at all if our two new arrivals this summer were English. Ashley Cole is a terrific player. For me, he is by far the best left-back in the world and, along with Drogba, Chelsea’s best player. I am sure Chelsea will do all they can to keep him but he had a difficult year in England. A change might be what he is looking for. When a player is the best in his position in the world and doesn’t play for Real Madrid, you have to consider it a waste. He has done everything in England for Arsenal and Chelsea. It’s now time for him to come and win La Liga and the Champions League with Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho.”

He goes on “Jose will know all about him. He has a history of signing players and trying to sign players from his previous clubs. More importantly, players seem to love playing under him. I spoke with Cristiano Ronaldo about him – and he told me Cole is the toughest defender he has ever played against. That’s quite a compliment coming from the world’s best player and he is exactly the sort of player we want.”

So, with his bridges well and truly burned in England, is Cole likely to be playing his football in La Liga next season?
