Ricardo Carvalho: Chelsea’s Loss Or Real Madrid’s Gain?

The news that Ricardo Carvalho was departing Chelsea didn’t come as a surprise yesterday. I mean, he barely had the shirt on his back all last season, came out with his insulting statements about his desire for a move and then got dropped for the Community Shield despite Alex’s injury, so it didn’t take a genius to work out he wouldn’t play for us again.

What did surprise me though if I’m honest, is that he really did get a deal with Real Madrid and it was for £6.7million. We actually did alright out of that I reckon. Ok, so technically we’re a defender light now but let’s be honest, Carvalho had made his mind up he wanted to leave a year ago and we didn’t grant the move then, since then, he spent more of the last season off the pitch than on and it and when he did get a game, he was a shadow of his former.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking him, for most of his time at Chelsea he’s been our best central defender and like any other supporter, I respect that. I guess I’m just surprised that given his age and his form over the past season, Real Madrid were the club bringing him in and giving us that sort of money as well.

So, has Mourinho brought him in because he can’t see past the younger, fitter Carvalho he used to manage or was it a shrewd buy that will suddenly see a revival in John Terry’s former defensive partner?

  1. I think Carvalho will bring a lot of big game experience to the Real team – he has won a lot of things and Jose loves that.

  2. we sure are goin to miss the guy. yeah jt is good but beside carvalho,he’s invisible.goodluck rici….

  3. While he did give us a number of solid years, I think it is time for him to move on. Especially since we have already committed to the youth movement. This opens us some room for Bruma, Hutchison and some of the other young defenders or possible the acquisition of David Luiz from Benfica.

  4. i think he will be missed and even if we buy david luiz i would have prefferd him to stay and guide the youngster into the premier league from the portuguese league

  5. we are losing a lot of experienced players at Chelsea, I understand maybe they are trying to cut the age of the squad or the wage bill, but as we’ve seen from pre-season, the younger players are not up to first team standards yet, it’s a bit worrying. I hope Chelsea make a couple of good signings soon.

  6. I surely hope this means we’re going to complete a transfer for David Luiz. I am excited at the possibility of adding more Brasilian flair to our team this season. Ramires will put Mikel on the bench and Luiz is more than adequate replacement for Riccy! I watched the USA/Brasil friendly last night and Neymar scored a wonderful header! We need to complete the transfer for him at any cost; he will be one of the Brasilian greats!

  7. you can’t replace carvalho.

  8. When is Ramires coming???????????????

  9. Chelsea doesn’t look lik a team wt this departure of experienced guys, y the cry of too much old players? Doesn’t united ve more oldies who r doin well, ancelotti is ruinin ma beautiful game by refusin 2 feature Kakuta. Where’s Kak anyway is he injured, on loan, sold, kidnapped, jailed, abandoned, hired, stolen, reserved, saved or Old equally? Ance should bring luis, neymar nd agu 2 Chelsea OR I’LL …. Cos i’ll not like Chelsea been spread so apart lik bitcher dis season. Kakuta was is nd will be our chicharito ! now wher’s he- unleash him UNLEASH him UnLEasH him pleasa Mr A

  10. carvalho is awesome n cannot b replaced by david luiz him going is a huge loss hopefully carvalho will hav a gr8 time at madrid n he was awesome 4 chelsea n we will miss him carvalho u rok n now the positive side of this is that our team is gtin younger n v shud buy ozil n luiz n kaka v hav only 6 midfeilders wid ramires in so v shud buy like b4

  11. Austino – Ramires needs a work permit, it seems thats the only hold up now.

  12. he was somewhere between poor & average last season…carried by jt until alex was fit then dumped out of the team. the season before that he was hardly ever fit & when he played chelsea shipped goals (8 goals in two games with him on the pitch). should have sold him 2 seasons ago…because up to that point he had been brilliant.

  13. (Chelsea fan) At the end of the day, maybe we didn’t need Carvalho afterall. It is true that he prettymuch made his mind-up to leave Chelsea last year but only failed to go because Inter were claiming that we overpriced him. I still think we need to make a marquee signing this summer. Perhaps we should continue looking at David Luiz . Ramirez is on his way to Stamford bridge. On top of that i think we need one more defender and a central attacking midfielder……….

  14. i think he has been a wonderful guy for the blue, but life continue and d blue can cope without he, but anyway we wish him d best stay in madrid.
