Devastating News For Chelsea Defender

For some, a career as a professional footballer can be all too short and that is sadly the case for Chelsea’s Sam Hutchinson, who has been forced to retire from playing at the age of just 21.
The young defender has been at the club since he was 9 but over the last 3 years, has been dogged with a knee injury. He did manage 4 first team appearances in spite of that, with a Man of the Match performance in his start against QPR last summer in the Carling Cup, and the potential to push on from there was evident.
Unfortunately for Sam though, despite putting in every effort over the summer, it has now been decided that following another reoccurrence, the injury will never recover enough to see him make it as a professional player and his retirement was therefore announced on the official site tonight.
Chelsea at least, will continue to support him, stating “Hutchinson will continue to be supported by Chelsea Football Club and will work in our Academy while also studying sports science at university. He will later pursue coaching qualifications.”
Devastating news for a promising young player though and TheChelseaBlog can only wish him well, whichever direction his career takes him in now.

Chelsea News 24/7

It’s really sad news. Of all our younger players to emerge in recent years it looked like Hutchinson had as good a chance as any of emulating JT as a regular 1st teamer.
His final major contribution as a pro-footballer was to be that fantastic cross for Lamps to volley home during the 7-0 win over Stoke.
I’m glad that Chelsea are going to support him during his studies and qualifications and I wish him well for the future.
Hopefully he’ll take inspiration from those that have had to give up playing at an early age but gone on to have successful careers as a coach.
this story is heartbreaking. i remember his cross to lamps that gatling gun referred to and it was absolutely beautiful. i was really hoping to see sam this upcoming season and my best wishes are with him for his future.
I feel so bad for him
He can take credit for playing a big part in one of Chelsea’s greatest ever goals (Lamps vs Stoke). Sad news because he was a blue through and through and had real potential. Good to see the club are sticking by he side while he works towards a different but hopefully successful future.
Sad news for Sam he was a great hope and one of our own. Fair play to the club – the decent side of football that will sadly be missed by the press no doubt! Better luck in your new career mate, you will be just as professional at that no doubt.
i also belieave that hutehrison had agood chance in the chelsea 1st team if he can inpress the coach.
This made me very sad this morning. I was also there at the Stoke game, but never thought I was witnessing his last appearance. He was excellent and I wish him all the best in whatever lies ahead. I hope the club really do follow through with their promises of support for the lad.
Same as everybody, wish Sam all the best for the future and hope that the support that Chelsea are giving him leads to a career in some sort at the Bridge for years to come.
This is so devastating, in my book, he’s been our best prospect over the last couple of years, and his role in the QPR game showed, that this was a real class act. It’s sad to see such a promising Career end before it really started. This is sad for Sam, sad for Chelsea and sad for England.
Sam if you come across this post, I wish you the best of Luck, and I’m hoping that one day you will pick of medals for this club in a coaching position.
