Was Anelka Arrogant or Honest?

There’s mixed opinion about Nicolas Anelka’s reaction to his 18 match ban for France and either he’s arrogant and unprofessional or he’s spot on for sticking two fingers up at the mess that is the FFF. So what’s your take on it?

The mess that was France’s World Cup, had already seen Laurent Blanc suspend the entire squad of 23 players for a friendly against Norway this month and the FFF withhold bonuses and then on Tuesday, the FFF went on to dish out bans of 5 matches for Evra, 3 for Ribery, 1 game for Toulalan and an incredible 18 games for Anelka.

Anelka’s take on it, when informed of the suspension which effectively ended his international career, was to say “For me, this whole commission thing is a nonsense, a charade not to lose face. The so-called punishment has no relevance whatsoever because, for me, the French national team was an issue which ended on June 19 when I was kicked out of the training centre at Knysna. This is just to entertain the public, to turn the page because Laurent Blanc needs to be able to work in peace. These people are clowns. I am dying with laughter.”

Is that the statement of an arrogant man who thinks he’s bigger than the national side though or just the opinion of a player who thinks those in charge have used him as a scapegoat to mask their own incompetence?

Maybe I’m biased but for me, Domenech should never have been at the World Cup in the first place. He was carrying personal grudges against players right from the word go and let that cloud his judgement when it came to selecting the team, so is it any surprise his players didn’t respect him? Everyone but the French FA knew the mistake had been made before they even got out there and when it did bite the powers that be on the bum and descended into the mother of all farces, Anelka quite rightly lost his rag.

And now, he’s the one to carry the can the French FA weren’t prepared to bear the weight of – and quite rightly, seeing as he’d retired himself from France anyway – has laughed off the very public (and completely OTT) ‘punishment’.

Of course, if this was England’s national side, and an England player, maybe I’d feel differently but then again, if the English FA let a man like Domenech take my national side to a World Cup – maybe I wouldn’t!

  1. Everyone in France knew they where going to have an awful world cup. No one was positive and they still stuck with the Manager. They make the FA look compitent and they only have themselves to blame for this whole mess. Sure, Anelka shouldn’t have told his manager to go F himself, if he even did say that, but it never should have gotten to that in the first place.

You can’t fire me because I quit – a month ago. I really did laugh when they said they banned him. I can’t be the only person that noticed the ban is just until the runup to the Euros.

  2. Honest.

I wouldn’t dare to imagine what goes on in the minds of Frenchmen, especially Frenchmen in authority but I’m sure it’s something like laughable with a hint of garlic and a large dollop of cowardice.

Anelka’s international retirement is their loss and our gain

  3. in support of Anelka i will say that the French were not suposed to be at the world cup in first place. had the ref called for Henry handball against the Irish, Domenech wouldn’t have been in SA and so is the rest of the French flops. in regard to the last sentence i like to say i love Chelsea Football Club and Anelka himself as a player of Chelsea, however if they cheeted their way in to the WC they got wat they deserved. as for the FFF they are a bunch of muppets.

  4. indian television channels are reporting since yesterday that chelsea are on verge ofsigning 30 year old central defender from a team NAYA NANGAL FOOTBALL CLUB(NNFC). He is likely to cost chelsea half a million pound. the guy is 6 feet tall and very good in air. can also play a sweeper, a right back and a holding midfielder. he has been scouted by some scout of indian origin living at isleworth. interesting fact is that this guy has never played for indian team. he has shone in last 2 seasons.

please tell something about this guy

  5. they are telling name of guy is MANDEEP SINGH LUCKY. HE WEARS NUMBER 81 JERSEY FOR HIS CLUB. ANY CLUE, IS THE REPORTING TRUE BY INDIAN TELEVISION CHANNELS.

  6. 1. Anelka did wrong in blowing it at the coach while in the middle of a WC .. sports isnt all about better tactics/coach and stuff like that .. there are times when you have to deal with emotion and letting go of ur horses in the middle of the most important tournament of that sport is just not done!

    2. Domenech is an ASS .. now that they are punishing all the players .. would they please announce or at the very least give a statement about how domenech too was responsible for the the fiasco?!

    3. Considering point no.2 and keeping 1 in mind .. i think 6-10 matches wud be fine! 18 is simply making a scapegoat out of someone.

I think since they cant ‘penalize’ domenech .. they gave his share to anelka as it was clear he werent returning to the national side anyway .. :P
