Drogba: I Think I’m Appreciated

I think it’s fair to say that outside of Chelsea, Didier Drogba isn’t everyone’s favourite player. Of course, anyone as good as Drogba is bound to be less favoured by the opposition anyway but if we’re honest, it’s never just been about his game has it?

It’s been a pretty eventful time at Chelsea since his arrival in 2004. He wasn’t particularly rated on arrival and I remember having plenty of heated debates – all in his defence. Often pilloried for his apparent lack of effort – in other words goals – with a former Chelsea team-mate even alleged to have suggested “Drogba has the worst first touch of a professional I’ve ever seen”, on the Ivorian’s first training session.

Personally, I always thought he worked like a Trojan, his contribution was never really appreciated enough and if everyone got off his back, the goals would come – which of course they did – but so did a lot of undesirable by-products as well. Because when Drogba came from Marseille, so did the theatrics, with the constant threats to leave, not to mention the affliction he had with his balance.

The goals came though and any bad behaviour along the way is generally forgiven these days and Drogba says “I think I am appreciated here now and I am really grateful to the fans in England. In my first season here I found it difficult to adapt and it was hard for fans to understand me. Now people think I am much better and I really love being here. The most important thing for me was to understand the culture of the game in this country. Now I have done that and I think I get a lot more respect from everybody in England.”

I’m not so sure about the ‘everybody in England’ bit, I’m sure the vast majority outside of Chelsea still hate him, particularly in the form he’s in but I guess as long as he’s happy, he can keep doing what he’s doing.

Blue is the colour

TheChelseaBlog.org is an honest insight to the World of Chelsea FC. Not always pretty, sometimes rather cynical, but always realistic.
