Wenger Raiding Chelsea In Last Minute Panic Buy?

So, we’re edging ever closer to the frantic final day of the transfer window and it’s all getting a bit frenzied as far as Chelsea rumours go. At this late stage it looks as if we’ll be concentrating as much on departures as arrivals as far as the press tell us, but as we know, anything could happen over the next 24 hours or so.

For a start, we know Yossi Benayoun is earmarked for a move, we just don’t know where that move might be. Both him and Alex have been linked with interest from Arsenal although given the state of play at the Emirates right now, they’d probably both 8-2 go there!

Still, if we can prise Yossi out of the cupboard he no doubt locked himself in when he heard that news, a potential move back to Liverpool could be on the cards.  Yesterday we were alleged to have offered him plus either £7 or £8million (depending where you read it) in exchange for Raul Meireles.  Mind you, even though Liverpool have first refusal on the Israeli midfielder we paid them £5million for, they don’t appear to want him back and certainly don’t want to sell Meireles to another Premier League club.

On to Arsenal’s interest in Alex then and it’s probably fair to say Arsene Wenger needs to look at his defence before the window shuts. Having conceded 8 against United at the weekend you might suggest it’s a miracle he needs rather than a back four but anyway, rumour has it, he’s hoping our Brazilian central defender could go there and look a little more lively than he did for us in his last game.

Both Florent Malouda and Salomon Kalou’s names have cropped, with Arsene Wenger (again) potentially putting in a late £8million bid for Malouda and a possible move to Lille for Kalou, although by the sounds of it, if Arsenal end up with half our squad it wouldn’t be a huge shock now.

Coming in for us meanwhile could be Alvaro Pereira from Porto if we’re prepared to go above the £17.7m they turned down last week and maybe even Luka Modric although any move to Stamford Bridge for him now would make Steve McQueen’s ‘Great Escape’ look like Mr Bean’s vacation.

Still, let’s wait and see eh?
