CHELSEA vs Everton: Preview

Venue: Stamford Bridge

Date: Saturday, 15 October

Kick-off: 1730 BST

I always have mixed feelings about playing Everton. On the one hand, I’ve never minded them as a team but on the other, it drives me insane that they’ve become so bloody difficult to get 3 points off.   They took four points off us last season (as well as beating us on penalties in an FA Cup replay), haven’t lost at Stamford Bridge in their last six games there and it’s probably fair to say our last few games against each other have been decidely forgettable. Needless to say, irrespective of their form so far this season, I’m not exactly wetting myself about this one yet.

MANAGERS’ VIEWS

Ahead of this game, AVB seems to have one eye on the league leaders, saying “In the next two weeks, there are two weeks of Premier League contenders playing against each other, so the others have to make the most of it.  We’ll have difficult games in Everton and QPR, but we will try to get six points.”

Whilet on today’s opposition, the Chelsea boss says “They are in a good situation and, once again, they are proving that David Moyes’ work is something fantastic.  Even with all the difficult financial problems they have, it’s a club that’s well organised and should make the English public proud.”

Everton’s David Moyes continues the mutual backslapping insisting “He (AVB) deserves to be at a big club because of what he did at Porto.  If you get to cup finals and win leagues and you are that successful, then you deserve the opportunity to get a big job and he has got one at Chelsea. He knows the situation, he has been there before and he earned his stripes at Porto.  He is a student of the game, he has been around it, he found himself a job at Porto and made it look easy – but that is because of the hard work he has put in.”

Whilst on Chelsea, Moyes says “I think there has been an improvement and they will be close to the Premier League come the end of the season.  A lot of people have maybe written them off as there is so much focus on Manchester with what United and City are doing, but I see a freshness in what is a younger team coming up through Chelsea at the moment with a young new manager who is keen to impress.  It is a theme that clubs are trying to bring in younger players and maybe it is the same with managers. Clubs want that stability – like I hope we have had at Everton – maybe they want a young manager who can stay the course and give them that longevity and I think the Chelsea manager could do that because, well, I thought I was one of the younger ones, but he is about half my age!”

SQUAD NEWS

For Chelsea, obviously Michael Essien (knee) remains absent, as does Hilario (hip and back).  John Terry is a doubt, with his dodgy back keeping him out of training, and David Luiz could be rested having just returned from Brazil.  Torres misses his second of three games.

For Everton, David Moyes will check on the fitness of Heitinga, Osman and Cahill as well as Rodwell, who should be available after his red against Liverpool was rescinded although missed England Under-21s game in Norway.
