Love him or loathe him, no-one can ignore him and it seems John Terry took centre-stage yet again yesterday as our players stepped out onto the pitch at the Emirates.
Not that we should have been surprised by that, he leads the team out every week anyway, but the fuss created simply by his selection this weekend would have anyone who didn’t understand the laws of the game believing we’d infringed upon FA rules somehow. I mean imagine the captain actually being selected to captain the side – shocking stuff!
Anyway, Roberto Di Matteo, still under the impression it’s up to him and not the latest bandwagon and its occupants to pick the side, says “It was the right choice to pick him. John once again showed his leadership qualities and just what a good defender he is. I had to think about what the right team was for the game and eventually made my selection. I speak to my players all the time but obviously had a conversation with John as well and he played very well. There is always a lot of talk about the negative side of things with John. He does a lot of good work as well.”
Whilst on Torres – yet another of our players repeatedly derided by the masses – Di Matteo says “Torres was excellent. He scored a great goal but his all-round play was excellent. He is a player who really works hard for the team. He chases defenders down, keeps them occupied and he was always a threat. Even when he doesn’t score he makes his contribution. He is the sort of player every team needs. I’ve always said he was happy. You tend to over-analyse a bit too much. I was always happy with his contribution and he scored a great goal.”
Agreed on both counts Roberto!
