Burnley 1-3 CHELSEA: Fifty Shades of Fabregas

After what was quite an uninspiring opening weekend to the new season, football arrived last night – in style.
If we’d been expecting an improvement following the changes in personnel over the summer, we weren’t left wanting either. Costa opened his account for us, Courtois pulled off a ridiculously good save but it was Cesc Fabregas who really impressed.
We started brightly enough but some slapdash defending saw Scott Arfield beat Gary Cahill to put the ball past Courtois inside 15 minutes. Quite how he remained unmarked when he’d stood there shouting and waving his arms like a schoolboy’s mum on the sidelines for a couple of minutes is beyond me but the goal only served to motivate us a bit more.
Within three minutes, Costa had equalized thanks to a Fabregas flick to Ivanovic, who duly crossed it for Costa to drive home. Our second, just 4 minutes later was pure football porn. Started by Fabregas and picked up by Eden Hazard, who ran it through just about any Burnley player who had the audacity to be on the pitch, it was laid right to Ivanovic – and as if that move alone didn’t send the Kleenex sales through the roof, what came next would keep the wet wipes industry in sales for the rest of the financial year. An unmarked Fabregas received the ball from Branna with a touch that Mr Fifty Shades himself would be proud of – and the climax – with a sublime pass from Fabregas to Schurrle, whose finish was top rate, definitely resulted in cries of ‘yessssssssssss’ even Mr Grey couldn’t conjure up.
We weren’t done yet though and the crowd of players around Michael Oliver when Costa was wrongly adjudged to have dived in the box under the challenge of Heaton, was reminiscent of the togetherness we’ve seen under Mourinho in a former life. Obviously the yellow shown to Costa was even more harsh given the correct decision would have been a penalty but we didn’t stew over it unnecessarily. 34 minutes in Fabregas curled a corner in for Ivanovic to score our third and we cruised into the break, buoyant.
The second half was all about keeping hold of what we had without expending too much energy and we did that comfortably. We even had the luxury of a little cameo from Didier Drogba for the last few minutes.
Overall though great performance but it was all about the apparent change in mindset for me that stood out. Last season, Jose was quite resolute in his assertion we weren’t ready to mount a serious title challenge. This season, he’s quite clear we are and seemingly, if John Terry’s post-match comments are anything to go on, so are the players.
We didn’t just look different, we felt different. And it felt bloody great!
