Chelsea’s Summer Transfer Policy

The world of transfers has been changing over the last few seasons. There is a necessity to buy players every summer, as teams are never complete. Chelsea are no exception to this policy, in fact they tend to excel at it. Last summer, we addressed our major issue, the lack of striker. However, Mourinho also convinced us that we needed a player we didn’t even know was on the market, Cesc Fabregas. Although, he is struggling lately, he has been a revelation overall this season. We have seen him be really effective in the CAM role, sometimes looking more threatening than as a deep-lying playmaker. This coupled with the fact that Oscar has also been lacking form lately has highlighted Chelsea’s missing depth in the CDM position.

Chelsea must enter the transfer market this summer, with the prime intention of buying a new CDM to compliment Matic. I would like to see them locate a player who is a strong box-to-box midfielder, with an ability to be a playmaker as well. Looking at the market, I have identified a few players who Chelsea could sign.

First and foremost, Chelsea should do everything they can to acquire Paul Pogba. While this will be difficult, Pogba represents the best overall option in this position. The Frenchman has proven he can be the physical presence that Chelsea desperately need next to Matic. However, Pogba comes with the class and playmaker abilities that Chelsea should need in that position. He has his youth on his side, and has the potential to be one of the best players in the world. The one reason this deal might be more realistic than people might initially think, is because Juventus has expressed interest in Chelsea’s Oscar. This could be a good makeweight for the deal to occur. Chelsea could play Pogba deeper next to Matic and move Fabregas higher up the pitch.

Another option that Chelsea could consider, is Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin. The 25 year old is a very good box-to-box midfielder, who will do well to compliment Matic. The Frenchman has shown that he can help to dictate the midfield, while also having the ability to make strong runs from deeper on the pitch. He will also come a lot cheaper than Pogba.

Finally, if Chelsea choose not to buy another CDM and instead choose to buy another CAM, they won’t go wrong with Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen. The midfielder has been in dazzling form this season, and will be seeking Champions League football if Tottenham are unable to qualify this season. The Danish star is becoming one of the world’s best playmakers and is only 23 years old. Chelsea would do well to secure Eriksen early on, as he is sure to be coveted by several big teams should he continue to improve at this rate. He would offer Chelsea an alternative option to Oscar at CAM.

Overall, Chelsea must make some offseason moves this summer in order to remain competitive in the league, along with challenging further in the Champions League. I think with a few purchases, Chelsea could become the strongest team in Europe. It will be interesting to see who the Blues target this summer. One thing’s for certain, Chelsea are never finished improving their squad.
