Southampton v CHELSEA: Preview

Date: Sunday 30th October, 2016
Venue: St Mary’s Stadium
Kick-off: 16:00 GMT

This afternoon’s game sees Chelsea make the trip to St Mary’s to face a Southampton side in decent form. Not only have they won their last five games at home in the league and cup but they’re unbeaten at St Mary’s since February 2016.
Of course, it was Chelsea who came back from a goal down to win that particular fixture 2-1 and the midweek game to West Ham aside, we’ve not looked too shabby ourselves lately. Our current run of three league wins without conceding is our best in almost two seasons.
Before Conte decided on 7 changes for the league cup, Chelsea had scored 9 goals in 3 games – 4 of them against United last weekend – without response, thanks to Conte’s new set up defensively keeping things nice and tight at the back. Mind you, whilst Southampton have failed to stop us scoring in our last 13 meetings, this season, only Spurs have conceded fewer goals than the Saints.
Unlikely to to be a goal fest, so I suspect it will either come down to individual error losing it or individual brilliance deciding it.

Going into today’s game, Southampton manager Claude Puel says “It is a fantastic match for my players on Sunday. The most important thing is we play our game. We know they’re a great team with the capacity to perhaps win the title. It will be tough.”
Chelsea boss Antonio Conte meanwhile, says “There are five teams who are very close but we shouldn’t look at the table, we must be focused on our work on the pitch. It’s too early to talk about the table or the title. We must improve game by game and trust in the work, that’s the most important thing.”

For Southampton, Jay Rodriguez (concussion) is a doubt along with Ryan Bertrand. Sofiane Boufal hopes to start.
For Chelsea, Cesc Fabregas (thigh) is injured, Kurt Zouma (knee) isn’t yet ready for a return to first team action although, Branislav Ivanovic is available again.

SOUTHAMPTON (Possible line-up): Forster; Martina, Fonte, Dijk, McQueen; Clasie, Romeu, Davis; Tadic; Redmond, Austin
CHELSEA (Possible line-up): Courtois; Cahill, Luiz, Terry; Azpilicueta, Matic, Kante, Alonso; Hazard, Costa, Willian
