CHELSEA v Southampton: Preview

Date: Tuesday 25th April, 2017
Venue: Stamford Bridge
Kick-off: 19:45 BST

We had a bit of a battle at the weekend before Eden Hazard edged us in front against Spurs and Nemanja Matic made the win certain with a belter from 25 yards out. So now that our FA Cup final spot is booked against Arsenal, it’s back to the business of the Premier League at home to Southampton.
The Saints have done well away from home lately, with 3 wins from the last 4, and whilst they haven’t beaten any of the current top six this season, they won’t fear coming to Stamford Bridge given their record against us.
Chelsea on the other hand, have lost 2 out of their last 4 in the Premier League and haven’t managed a clean sheet in ten games. This won’t be an easy game by any means but the pressure is on to keep that Spurs bus in the garage for another year.

Going into tonight’s game, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte says “I have in my mind the starting 11 but tomorrow I want to check very well the physical consideration of every single player as our last game was an intense one and used energy. But we have trained very well this season and we have a lot of energy to face this type of situation. It is important for us to win and look at ourselves, but we all know that tomorrow it won’t be easy because Southampton is a very good team with a good coach and good players.”
Southampton manager Claude Puel meanwhile, says “They are a fantastic team that want to win the title, but for us as well it is important to take points. I am confident with my players. They work very well in training, it’s important to play our game and enjoy it. The best team in the Premier League is the one with the most consistency and, for the moment that is Chelsea.”

For Chelsea, Gary Cahill (gastroenteritis) could return, whilst Diego Costa and Eden Hazard could start after coming on from the bench in the FA Cup at the weekend.
For Southampton, Targett, Austin, McCarthy and van Dijk are joined by Sam McQueen (groin) on the missing list, although Oriel Romeu is back from his ban.

CHELSEA (Possible line-up): Courtois; Azpilicueta, Luiz, Ake; Moses, Kante, Matic, Alonso; Hazard, Costa, Pedro
SOUTHAMPTON (Possible line-up): Forster; Soares, Stephens, Yoshida, Bertrand; Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Davis; Redmond, Gabbiadini, Boufal
