Transfer news: AC Milan loan for Bakayoko, with Kovacic set to arrive

Transfer news

Chelsea’s busy end to the transfer window is set to continue. After agreeing a world record £71 million deal to sign goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao to replace Thibaut Courtois, there is going to be some reshuffling in the midfield department as well.

Courtois’ exit to Real Madrid is all but done as well, and the Spanish club are also willing to add in Mateo Kovacic as part of the deal to ease proceedings. As reported here by Sky Sports, the 24 year-old midfielder will join The Blues on a one-year loan deal. He is completely out of favour at the Santiago Bernabeu, and is unlikely to get into the team ahead of Casemiro, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric next season. As of now, there is no option for us to buy him after the loan term comes to an end.

We have a plethora of midfielders at our disposal already, including new signing Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, Ross Barkley, Cesc Fabregas, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Danny Drinkwater. If Kovacic gets added to the mix, it wouldn’t at all be surprising to see at least one of these individuals leave Stamford Bridge.

According to Italian source Gianluca Di Marzio, Bakayoko is attracting interest from AC Milan, who are interesting in signing the Frenchman on a loan deal with the subsequent option to buy.

It just hasn’t worked out for the midfielder at Chelsea, following his much talked about move from Monaco last summer. The soon-to-be 24 year-old struggled to adapt to English football, appearing lackadaisical and sluggish from the start. Antonio Conte persisted with playing him week-in, week-out and though there were some slightly better performances here and there, the season as a whole was dismally miserable for the player.

With Jorginho coming in, and Maurizio Sarri preferring a 4-3-3 with a holder, a playmaker and an attacking midfielder in the centre of the park, the chances for Bakayoko are going to be few and far between this season. A move away, even though it has only been one year, could be in the best interests of both parties involved.

Bakayoko does feature for us in the final pre-season friendly against Lyon at Stamford Bridge tonight, but will it be the last time we see him in a Chelsea shirt?
