CHELSEA 5-0 Blackburn: Blues Back On Top

Can’t grumble at that eh?

Well, you could say if we’d taken the chances we missed in the first half, double figures wouldn’t have been out of the question, but let’s not be picky here. Paul Robinson might have seen five go past him but he saved just as many and certainly worked a lot harder than any of team mates can claim to.

Anyway, enough about the opposition because whilst I usually always give them their dues, this game was all about us. Joe Cole is back, and it showed.  He may well have missed a sitter with his head in the opening minute but he made up for it in spades with the sort of comeback performance no player has the right to put in after nine months out. And what Joe Cole added in his central role, allowed us to totally dominate the game.

Our first came from a move started by Michael Ballack, with a beautiful pass from midfield to Anelka down the left, who put it into the six-yard box. I’m sure he was aiming for Drogba but Givet saved him the trouble by slotting it past Robinson himself. Both Anelka and Didier Drogba were unlucky with a couple of hard-hit shots later, although maybe it was Robinson who was lucky to go in at the break in one piece.

It was the second half we really came into our own though and it only took us a couple of minutes from the kick-off to open Blackburn up.  Having broke his duck mid-week, Frank Lampard hit home from eight yards out on 48 minutes, before Michael Essien just four minutes later, picked the ball up 35 yards out and lashed it past Robinson to make it 3-0.

Robinson must’ve been praying the Blackburn defence would wake up long enough to at least take the ball out of their half by this time but they were obviously quite comfortable down that end of the field because they didn’t appear in any great hurry to play anywhere else. And when Nelsen brought Didier Drogba down in the area in the 59th minute, Robinson must’ve known no amount of prayers were going to make any difference the minute Lampard stepped up to the spot. I mean, he just doesn’t miss them does he? So, 4-0 it was.

And the agony wasn’t even over for Blackburn there because in the 64th minute, Michael Ballack swept in the perfect cross – well perfect as far as Didier Drogba was concerned, with the Ivorian managing to head home despite being pulled about all over the place.

Sadly a sixth goal eluded us but Jeffrey Bruma got a run out, coming on for Ricardo Carvalho before Joe Cole went off to deserved standing ovation with 15 minutes to go, to be replaced by Daniel Sturridge who’ll start thinking he’s got a contract with us if he keeps getting to wear the shirt.

Overall then – bloody rampant!

GOALS:

Givet (og) 20, Lampard 48, Essien 52, Lampard (pen) 59, Drogba 64.
