Chelsea Injury Update: Lampard, Alex & Benayoun

Yesterday, TheChelseaBlog ran a reader’s post on what we’re missing from midfield with Frank Lampard out. So, the news that he shouldn’t be out much longer is obviously welcome. Unfortunately though, the news on Alex and Yossi Benayoun wasn’t greeted quite as well.

Frank Lampard hasn’t played since undergoing surgery on a hernia after the game against Stoke back in August – a bit drastic to get out of international duty but obviously well worth it because he gets out of the Montenegro game as well – then hopes to make his return for his club, suggesting “I don’t really want to set dates but I’m hoping to return after the international break. I’ve got a good couple of weeks to work with the physios. Hopefully, I won’t be too far away.”

Onto Yossi Benayoun though and the news really doesn’t sound good, with some reports suggesting our summer signing could miss the rest of the season. He’s been out for the past couple of games anyway with a ‘calf strain’ but having had scans since joining his national team, the suggestion is he has a ‘complex’ injury to his Achilles tendon, with Yossi says “I hope to help the team, but unfortunately this is not a simple injury. The team and I will cross our fingers. After more tests I will know exactly what the continuing treatment will be.”

Alex meanwhile, hobbled off in our win against Arsenal at the weekend after he’d smacked a stunning free-kick into the back of their net and having sustained a thigh injury, it looks as if he’ll miss the forthcoming internationals as well as our next couple of games.
