Want Guaranteed Excitement? Sign For Arsenal

Arsenal’s Abou Diaby has chosen the week his side lost 2-0 to Chelsea to make it clear he could’ve played for us if he wanted to. Obviously he didn’t want to because he signed for them instead and evidently, given our trophy haul since he joined them in the 2005/06 season – not signing him has been a big loss to us!

Anyway, he apparently had talks with Mourinho in 2005 but says “Did Chelsea try to sign me in 2005? Yes, but it was very complex. I visited the facilities but when I was there I had a chat with Lassana Diarra and he told me: ‘Abou, I have not played for three months’. That made me hesitate. I even had a chat with José Mourinho. He was very frank and told me: ‘I have a big team, with big players and I can’t guarantee you anything, but we do want you’.”

That seems fair enough to me, I mean, obviously at the time Mourinho had more players than sense but even in the majority of Premier League ‘squads’ these days manager’s don’t guarantee players anything – the clue’s in the word squad really. Still, a guarantee is what Diaby wanted and naturally, being about 20 at the time – up popped the Premier League’s favourite foster parent to bring the young Frenchman into his fold.

Diaby explains “Arsene Wenger told me that he was looking for a midfielder to replace Vieira, that I had the same profile and that I would play. At that time, Arsenal had the French connection; Robért Píres and Thierry Henry were there, and that makes you dream. There were choices to make and Arsenal wanted me. They seemed exciting to me.”

Yeh, I’m sure he’s struggled to cope with all the excitement he’s had since he signed.
