Chelsea Keen To Hold On To Defender

Chelsea might have let several of our big earners go over the summer in an effort to slash our wage bill and get somewhere near an annual profit for the first time in years but it seems those savings won’t be at the expense of the players we did keep.

Branislav Ivanovic joined us in January 2008 for around £9million and his current £60,000 a week falls some way short of a fair few players. So, with his contract set to run out in 2012, Chelsea are rumoured to be ready to offer him a 50 per cent pay rise if he’ll extend his commitment to us until 2014.

The 26 year old has definitely been a key part of the squad, slotting in to cover at both right and centre back, starting seven out of nine Premier League games as well as his constant presence in the Champions League so far this season, so he’s a player the club are right to try to keep hold of.

With Bosingwa back though and Alex on the way, will Ivanovic need convincing to sign?
