Chelsea vs United: Red Opinion on Rooney’s Antics and United’s Chances

Ahead of this weekend’s game, TheChelseaBlog asked Big Red M over at Ramble United a few choice questions. Have a read of his opinion on everything from Rooney’s antics to a United/Chelsea best XI:

How do you think you’re doing this season?
Well, one certainly can’t complain, no matter how many points we’ve dropped so far. We’re sitting pretty at the top of the league with a game in hand and 3 points above you lot, which has calmed my nerves a lot ahead of this weekend, we never seem to do well there, unfortunately. Luckily though, we’ve got the oh-so-vital game in hand against Blackpool.

Bet Rooney missing the penalty had you sweating though?
Erm, not as much as I’d expected. Arsenal had a lot of possession in the game, and did naff all with it. They’d only made one real chance before that, and captain Vidic made sure nothing came of it. I was relatively confident of the lads seeing out the game, though our defensive problems that have popped up this season were in the back of my mind. They did well though for the final 15 minutes or so, and I think that was our best defensive performance of the season.

Speaking of Rooney, do you see him in a different light after all the messing about?
Of course, it’s hard not to. Before this season he – for lack of a better word – was my “hero”. He was the only player in our team that had that passion and determination since the times when Keano and Gary Neville were in the side. When he released that statement I felt like crying, and then felt like hurting him. You never know though, he could’ve done us a massive favour if the rumours are true about Gill promising investment in the squad. Time to bring Ronaldo home! Lol.

Reckon our recent form will give you the edge this weekend?
Not at all. I hope the team won’t be that naive either. We haven’t won at your place for something like 8 years, and that needs rectifying if we want to pull away from the chasing pack. It’s going to be a long ninety minutes, and the players need to do what they’re paid for properly. There’s no use being cocky, there’s a job to be done.

A United fan refusing to be cocky eh? Always a first time for everything! Are there any of our player’s you’d be worried about?
That’s a difficult question this season because of your injuries. If Lampard plays, he’s an obvious threat that needs neutralising, there’s Malouda and that little pest Ashley Cole too. I hate to admit this, but you’ve got threats all over the park, it’s not just one or two players like some other teams in the league. (Cough, Arsenal & Liverpool, cough).

Indeed. And what about your players, who should we watch out for?
Don’t let his lack of goals fool you, if he plays, Anderson is the man making us tick at the minute. Nani is enjoying some great form too, Evra seems to have picked up his game from earlier in the season, and of course there’s Berbatov. Rooney is playing really well too, when we play with 2 up top and he drops back, he’s capable of one of those Scholes-type passes that could ultimately decide a game. I’m sure Chicharito will be around to score another one with his face, too!

If you could pick the best XI from United and Chelsea combined, what would it be?
Christ, great question. I’d have Berbatov and Drogba up front, Malouda and Valencia bombing down the flanks, in the middle, Essien and Scholes. Left back is probably the hardest choice of the lot because Cole and Evra are the two best left backs in the world, because I’m a red, it has to be Paddy! In the middle I’d have Alex (just because of his insane freekicks!) and Vidic, accompanied by Rafael at right-back. Edwin in net. Seven reds, four of your lot. In honesty, Edwin and Cech are two of the best keepers on the planet, too. It’s hard to choose between them, so bias wins!

What do you think you’ll win this season?
Everything we’re still in for. That’s not arrogance, that’s me believing we have the talent, mentality and the manager to go all the way in each competition we enter. Of course, it doesn’t always work out that way, officials make mistakes (yes, I’m looking at that Drogba goal against us last season), and unpredictability comes in to play, for instance we were the best team over both legs against Bayern last season, but then your old boy Arjen popped up with that bit of brilliance, and they won on away goals.

Finally, what’s your prediction for the game?
I got the Arsenal score horrifically wrong, so I’ll probably get this one wrong too, but I’m thinking 2-1 United.

Well, I obviously won’t be wishing you luck! Cheers for that though.
