Repeat Of Last Season On The Cards For Chelsea?

Well, it’s almost mid-February or at least it will be by the time we play our next Premier League game and most of us still have no idea where we’ll end up come May. I would imagine even the most optimistic amongst us probably accepts that with a gap of ten points separating us from United though, it’s been a while since there was any real hope of challenging for the title.

Certainly, it seems as if our own players have given up on the idea, with John Terry realising a month ago we wouldn’t be retaining the title without a bit more backbone and Didier Drogba as recently as this week reported in the Guardian to be complaining about the ‘bad mood’ hanging over the club following our poor form of late.

Obviously, this time last season we weren’t exactly taking the league by storm. John Terry had just lost his England captaincy, the press were hanging round like a bad smell keen to lay the blame for our poor form at his door and despite a feisty performance against Arsenal, we managed to come unstuck against the Toffees.

More recently, we thought we’d picked ourselves up a bit, with consecutive Premier League wins but then despite signing Fernando Torres, ironically lost to Liverpool (harsh though that result was). So, what’s next on the Horizon?

Well, we definitely won’t be having an easy time of it over the next month or so. First up, it’s away to Fulham on February 14th and there won’t be any love lost there. It’s never an easy game anyway and this season they’ve put themselves a handy side together. Then it’s back at Stamford Bridge on March 1st for the rescheduled game against United – you remember, the one we called off because we’d be in a better position to play it at a later date….oh. So, definitely a couple of tasty encounters there and well worth visiting TixDaq to get tickets for.

March 7th sees us face another away battle, this time at Blackpool, then back to the Bridge again on the 20th to see if we can break our recent poor run against City. And we have to wait until April 2nd for a Saturday game again, when we travel to Stoke.

But where will that run of games leaves us ahead of the run-in? Will we still be in the Champions League spots by then or will the end of our season see a bit of a scrap to stay in (or even get back in) the top four?

I’m guessing we’ll see what we’ve seen around this time of year for the past few years really. We’re seasoned performers and know what we need to do – and we’ve even got the added bonus of Torres and Luiz to help us do it this time. So, whilst there’s still points to be dropped for us (and we will still drop some), there’s still enough available to gain – and like we seem to every season around this time, gain them we will.
