I wonder how it feels to be Fernando Torres right now? I mean, on the one hand he’s at a top four Premier League club earning shitloads of money so it can’t be all bad but on the other, he can’t be getting much fun out of the game – or more specifically being under the spotlight every time he plays.
Whilst the press must be loving every 90 minutes that go by goalless, I can only imagine it has to be agony for Nando. And as if the speculation about him carrying long-term injuries isn’t bad enough, now he has to contend with his short time at Chelsea so far being compared to Shevchenko’s.
Of course, the rumours about injuries suffered at Liverpool meaning he’ll never fully get back to his former self come from bitter dippers and you’d have to assume they’re bullshit otherwise why would they hav tried so hard to keep hold of him if that was the case? As for the comparisons to Sheva, well to be fair Nando has only been at Chelsea since January and whilst he still hasn’t sussed which locker he left his shooting boots in, it’d be nice to get a full season out of him before that sort of comparison is made. As much as I defended him throughout his time at Chelsea, the reality is, Andriy Shevchenko cost us £30 million (a fair bit in 2006) and left after a 3 year spell with just 9 Premier League goals under his belt.
Obviously, his team-mates are quick to defend him to the press – as team-mates should – although Nando himself, shrugs it off as the press simply doing their job. When asked directly about his form, Nando stated “We are all trying to be in the best form for the new season. There are big expectations that Chelsea always have. I have been here six months and I can see the winning mentality they have. It’s going to be a long season. My form is OK, like my team-mates’. We have a new manager and it’s time to get ready.”
On the subject of whether or not he’ll get back to the form he showed at Liverpool though, the striker was much more to the point, insisting “I’m 27. I don’t forget to score goals. I will score.”
Well, that was the general idea Nando.
