Lukaku Comes In But Who Will Lose Out?

So, yesterday Chelsea confirmed an agreement had been reached with Anderlecht to bring Romelu Lukaku to Stamford Bridge. But what are we getting and what will that mean for the other players vying for the same position? Well, let’s have a look at what we’ve got:

Romelu Lukaku: Age 18, rumoured to be coming to us from Anderlecht for around £22million.  16 goals from 37 league games last season and 2 goals in 2 appearances for them so far this term. Hailed as the ‘new Drogba’, at 6ft 4 he has the physical stature but does he have the presence?

Didier Drogba: Age 33, came to Chelsea from Marseille for £24million in 2004.  Had a poor last campaign by his standards with a return of 13 goals from 46 appearances although he did have Malaria to contend with. In our 2009/10 double winning season, it was a much more impressive 37 from 44 so his impact on our success has never been in question. We know what he’s capable of on his day but has he already had that at Chelsea?

Fernando Torres: Age 27, came to us from Liverpool for £50 million in January (as if we don’t get reminded enough). One goal in 18 appearances for us certainly had tongues wagging last season but we’ve yet to see how he’ll do in a full season.  Managed 22 from 32 for Liverpool in 2009/10, so we know he’s got goals in him – we just need to get them out. To be fair, it’d take a brave manager to leave him on the bench given his price tag, although AVB doesn’t strike me as a man who’ll take many prisoners.

Nicolas Anelka: Age 32, came to Chelsea in the 2008 January window for £15 million.   Probably had his best season for us in 2008/09, with 19 goals in 37 in the league, last season giving us 16 goals from 45 games overall. Finally seemed to find a club he’s been happy to settle at with Chelsea but still often finds himself the scapegoat when someone needs dropping up front.

Salomon Kalou: Age 26, came to us in May 2006 for a reported £9,000,000.  A consistent 12 goal return in the past two seasons, from 36 appearances in 2009/10 and 41 overall last season. Often used on the wings rather than up front and that could well be his saving grace when the battle for a starting place as a striker begins.

Daniel Sturridge: Age 21, came to Chelsea from City in July 2009, for an initial fee of 3.5 million with additional payments to come. Scored 8 goal in 12 games whilst on loan at Bolton last season and has looked really handy pre-season, not least of all with a couple against Rangers yesterday. A no nonsense forward but clinical with his finish, Sturridge is really giving AVB something to think about.

Our latest frontman has made it clear he wouldn’t agree to come in if he was sent out on loan, but given AVB can’t play 6 of them at once, you’d imagine he’ll have to settle on a preferred pairing for the league at least. Any ideas?
