Whilst a fair few of us will be absolutely shitting ourselves on and off over the next week, or at least suffer the odd bout of butterflies as Saturday gets ever closer, the eternally cool Roberto Di Matteo is certainly keeping a lid on any nerves he might be suffering.
I mean Christ, if we think we’re nervous, at least we’ll all know we still have jobs to turn up for the following week – that poor bloke could be putting in his last shift and yet, with whatever makeshift side he’s taking there already underdogs, Di Matteo insists “If you manage to go through two legs against Barcelona, I think then you can beat anybody in European football. They’re supposed to be the best team and I think we have a fantastic group of players with tremendous quality and belief. The confidence is very high. The spirit is very high.”
In spite of winning the FA Cup last weekend, we all accept that failure to win at Munich’s Allianz Arena next week without players like Terry, Ramires, Ivanovic and Meireles, will mean us losing out on Champions League football next season and Di Matteo very possibly losing his job. Our no-nonsense interim manager though, says “We’ve enjoyed a good eight, nine weeks. The players have been fantastic with me. They’ve performed at the highest level possible and we’ve found ourselves in a great position now to win the biggest trophy in European football.”
