Didier Drogba at Chelsea: A Temporary Guest?

Didier Drogba. No doubt about it, a massive part of Chelsea’s success from Premier League titles to Champions League, he’ll always have a place in our history and our hearts – but isn’t that how it should remain?

Everyone loves to revisit happier times, we all love reminiscing about the ‘good old days’ but that doesn’t mean we need to go back there. I remember black and white TV but it doesn’t mean I want to be without my ipad. Or in other words, we should accept how good Didier Drogba was while he was at Chelsea, without feeling the need to bring him back. Ok, so Fernando Torres has never terrorised our opposition’s defences in quite the way his predecessor did – in fact, he’s probably tickled them more than he’s tormented them – but hankering after what Drogba used to do won’t change that. Chelsea need to move forward.

Yet recent reports seem to be suggesting Didier Drogba hopes we choose not to because, with Juventus hanging around waiting to take him to Turin, Drogba is allegedly holding on to the hope of an offer from Chelsea. With Shanghai Shenhua in too much of a financial mess to keep him and some of their other obscenely paid players, Drogba had initially hoped for a loan move to his former club. Yet with Juventus only to agree the terms and contract length to secure his transfer there, Drogba seems to be waiting for Chelsea to make some sort of move.

Only a week ago Drogba hosted a party to the tune of £800,000 to commemorate our Champions League win and with the Chinese Super League season over, is back at Stamford Bridge for the winter, training ahead of the African Cup of Nations in January.  So clearly the Ivorian is keeping very close ties with his former club and team-mates, but is that suggestive of anything more?

Personally I don’t think it is and with the club holding back on any contract extension offers for Frank Lampard, I honestly can’t see them considering the sort of offer Drogba would get from Juventus – and rightly so because as much gratitude as we have for Didier, we’re not Liverpool FC and we need to concentrate our efforts on creating history, not living in it.

TheChelseaBlog.org is an honest insight to the World of Chelsea FC. Not always pretty, sometimes rather cynical, but always realistic.
