Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard has appreciated the eagerness shown by Christian Pulisic to join the team for pre-season. The USA international agreed to join the Blues during the 2019 winter transfer window, but he has yet to make to represent the team, considering he spent the second half of the previous season on loan with Borussia Dortmund, where he signed from.
Speaking in a press conference covered by Goal.com, Lampard said that he has been impressed with the attitude of Pulisic, who has decided to cut short his vacation in order to report for pre-season duties with the club.
He said: “Christian joins us on Tuesday. He’s had a short break, but he wanted to get back with us quickly, which I certainly appreciate. I appreciate that [coming straight off the Gold Cup]. It’s how I would have been. I look forward to working with him.”
The 20-year-old completed his Gold Cup campaign with the United States on July 8 and it was predicted that he would take the regular three-week break from the game before reporting to Lampard’s side. However, he has decided to shorten the holiday by a fortnight and will be joining the Blues on July 16.
The west London giants begun their pre-season campaign in a rather uncharacteristic fashion as they played out a 1-1 draw against Bohemians in Dublin last week. They managed to make amends with a comfortable 4-0 triumph over St Patrick’s Athletic on Saturday, and will now be preparing for the big test against Barcelona, whom they face at the Saitama Stadium in Japan on 23rd July.
The friendly should give the Blues fans with the first glimpse of Pulisic in the club’s shirt, given he should be relatively match fit after the recent exploits with the national team. Pulisic contributed three goals and three assists during the recent Gold Cup where the United States suffered a 1-0 final defeat to Mexico.
