Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has predicted a bright future for young duo Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham, who have impressed during the club’s ongoing pre-season campaign.
Mount and Abraham spent the 2018/19 season on loan with Derby County and Aston Villa respectively, but they are likely to be offered the chance under manager Frank Lampard next term.
In a report covered by the Blues’ official website, Azpilicueta reserved special praise for the club graduates and he is hoping that the pair can make the breakthrough with the first-team at the earliest.
“They are two very talented players [Mount and Abraham] who had a great path in our Academy. They had great spells on loan last season. The next step is to perform well in the first team at Chelsea,” he said.
Mount has contributed the solitary goal in three pre-season matches this term, but he has been most impressive with the quick link-up play with his teammates in the final third of the field.
Abraham, likewise, has contributed the single goal from two friendly games but he still needs to make an improvement in his finishing after missing a sitter from six yards against Barcelona.
He managed to redeem himself with a classic goal in the 2-1 friendly win, but it remains to be seen whether he can beat the competition from Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud for the centre-forward role next season.
Chelsea have witnessed a mixed bag in terms of their pre-season performances and they have won just two of their four games. Still, there are positives with the likes of Mount, Abraham and Christian Pulisic taking the opportunity to impress under the new head coach.
The Blues are due to face Reading, Red Bull Salzburg and Borussia Monchengladbach in the forthcoming friendlies before tackling Manchester United in the opening game of the 2019/2020 Premier League campaign.
