Chelsea defender David Luiz is on the verge of making the move across London to join Premier League rivals Arsenal before Thursday’s transfer deadline, a report from Sky Sports News has revealed.
The Brazil international has been a regular within the Blues’ ranks since making the return from Paris Saint-Germain, but it appears that he has not received the assurance of a starting role under manager Frank Lampard.
He was spotted training away from his teammates on Wednesday in an attempt to push through an exit and Sky Sports has now revealed that the 32-year-old is on the cusp of joining Unai Emery’s side.
No deal has been officially agreed between the Capital clubs as of yet, but a separate report from The Mirror has indicated that the Blues are prepared to accept a fee of just around £8m to sanction his departure.
Luiz has been a key contributor towards the club’s success in two separate stints and in the recent campaign, he made 50 appearances across all competitions while playing a role in the Europa League title triumph.
Despite this, it appears that Lampard does not fancy offering regular gametime to the centre-back ahead of the likes of Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen and this seems to have paved the way for the anticipated exit.
Antonio Rudiger has just returned to training following a long-term knee injury but he is unlikely to make the matchday squad for the forthcoming Premier League opener against Manchester United.
Zouma and Christensen are pretty much the automatic choices to feature at the heart of the defence while promising centre-back Fikayo Tomori could take up the bench role during Sunday’s visit of Old Trafford.
