A number of Chelsea supporters feel the need for a change in the right-back spot following Cesar Azpilicueta’s poor performance against Manchester United in the Premier League opener.
Frank Lampard’s side showed plenty of optimism with their performances during the backend of pre-season and the same was replicated with a dominant start against the Red Devils at Old Trafford.
Despite this, things did not go the club’s way with a couple of goalscoring attempts finding the woodwork and a poor second half performance meant that the hosts went on to seal a comfortable 4-0 victory despite looking second best until the hour mark.
A number of players came for criticism from the fans on social media following the result and Azpilicueta was probably the most mentioned after being guilty of making mistakes in the lead up to two of the four goals conceded while being dispossessed on 22 occasions, as per Squawka.
As such, a selection of fans have expressed their frustration over the display from the club captain and a few have suggested that Reece James should replace the Spain international at right-back, once he returns to full fitness.
Here are the reactions on Twitter……
The decline of Azpilicueta has been so sad to see. He's only 29, he shouldn't have dropped too this level so early.
Considering he was one of our most consistent performers for several years.

It’s actually painful watching Azpi trying to chase Pogba, Pogba is not even that quick, he has to be the slowest defender in the league, Reece James is a must, it has to happen

Saying Azpilicueta should be dropped/upgraded on isn't disrespecting him or forgetting what he's done for the club. He's simply not the same player anymore & Reece James has to be the current & future starting right back of this club.

Azpilicueta could be done you know 😢 time for Reece James to step up maybe!

Not an over reaction to yesterday but been thinking it for a while now. Azpilicueta has been a great servant but he’s now showing the same frailties that Ivanovic did in his final years. Defensive mistakes, not getting forward effectively and lacking pace. #Time for Reece James

To be candid, i cant wait for Reece James to return to fitness and back in the game. for me Azpi has served us well at Chelsea. time for him to step aside.
Azpi played like a rookie yesterday! https://t.co/PLbJu0im7v

Azpilicueta's decline has been painful to watch honestly, for the greater good of this team he needs to enjoy that bench and give way to Reece James.

The west London side need to regroup quickly ahead of the midweek European Super Cup clash against Liverpool. No changes are expected in the backline, but Rudiger could return to the mix earlier than predicted. Kurt Zouma, who was paired alongside Andreas Christensen on Sunday, struggled with his positioning at the heart of the club’s defence.
