Chelsea are scheduled to face Liverpool in Wednesday night’s UEFA Super Cup clash in Istanbul.
Frank Lampard made the worst possible beginning to his managerial stint with the Blues after a 4-0 Premier League loss to Manchester United, but there should be a positive reaction from the players when they come up against Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Callum Hudson-Odoi, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Reece James and Marko van Ginkel are unavailable for the game as they recover from their respective injuries. Elsewhere, Antonio Rudiger and Willian have been included in the squad for the Super Cup clash after picking up their fitness, though N’Golo Kante remains a doubt with a fresh injury.
Kepa Arrizabalaga had a difficult time at Old Trafford last weekend where he could not restrict the hosts from scoring. Still, he remains the club’s best shot-stopper by a distance and should start in goal against the Champions League holders.
In the defence, Cesar Azpilicueta and Kurt Zouma were guilty of making mistakes which contributed to the goals conceded against United. Still, no changes are predicted with centre-back Rudiger not up to full fitness to make the starting lineup while Emerson may continue to get the nod over Marcos Alonso at left-back after being one of the club’s best performers last weekend.
In the centre of the park, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic are bound to continue with their partnership particularly with Kante struggling with a fresh injury concern. Lampard has the option of fielding Kante alongside the duo to add more stability in midfield, but judging by the press conference comments, a start for the Frenchman seems doubtful despite him training in some capacity on Tuesday.
Further forward, Ross Barkley is likely to get the chop in the attacking department following a mixed performance in Manchester, where he was guilty of losing the ball on multiple occasions. Moreover, the England international is not a left-sided winger by trade and he could be replaced by Christian Pulisic.
Elsewhere, Mason Mount should be rewarded with another start in the number 10 role after impressing on debut with Pedro keeping his place on the right side of the attack. Upfront, Olivier Giroud should lead the line ahead of Tammy Abraham, given he has an impressive record against Liverpool with six goals from just 13 appearances. The Frenchman has also got the better of Reds defender Virgil van Dijk in the past.
Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): Arrizabalaga, Azpilicueta, Christensen, Zouma, Emerson, Kovacic, Jorginho, Pedro, Mount, Pulisic, Giroud
