Chelsea entertain Leicester City in their first home game of the new Premier League campaign. The Blues are yet to taste a victory under the guidance of new boss Frank Lampard, but they have still been plenty of positives with a few players catching the eye under the 41-year-old’s guidance.
The Blues recently tackled Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup where they produced a noteworthy performance but that was not sufficient to secure them the trophy after the Reds won on a penalty shoot-out following a 2-2 draw after added extra-time.
Formation – 4-2-3-1
Kepa Arrizabalaga came up with one of his best performances in the Blues shirt in midweek. The Spain international remains the undisputed pick for the goalkeeping role and he is expected to start against Brendan Rodger’s side.
In the defence, Cesar Azpilicueta and Emerson should keep their respective places at right and left-back respectively. Azpilicueta has been guilty of making mistakes in both the games under Lampard but he is pretty much certain to feature as the captain of the team.
At the heart of the backline, there are doubts regarding the fitness of Andreas Christensen after he sustained a knock before the end of 90 minutes against Liverpool. In this case, Antonio Rudiger could be pushed to make his comeback after a long-term injury to partner Kurt Zouma. Fikayo Tomori may probably replace the former late in the game, should there be fitness concerns.
In the centre of the park, Lampard should resort to a two-man midfield and we are anticipating Jorginho to partner N’Golo Kante, who was excellent on Wednesday night. Mateo Kovacic seems the likely candidate to drop to the bench from the Super Cup clash.
Mason Mount impressed with his link-up play and key interceptions after coming off the bench in the midweek game and the young Englishman should be fancied to make his home league debut from the number 10 position.
Besides this, there may be no further changes with Christian Pulisic and Pedro occupying the left and right wing respectively while Olivier Giroud should lead the line ahead of Tammy Abraham after getting on to the scoresheet against Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Predicted Chelsea lineup: Kepa Arrizabalaga, Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger, Kurt Zouma, Emerson, N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Pedro, Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic, Olivier Giroud
